Need advice for repotting root bound Alberta Spruce

I just brought home an alberta spruce, cultivar unknown, in a 5 gallon bucket. The plant looks pretty healthy but the roots are a mess: a rock hard, coiled tangle. I've read and clipped Al's instructions for root-pruning deciduous trees, but can't find anything on evergreens. Also, plant is well out of dormancy, it's full summer here in southeastern PA and the daytime temps are in the 90s. I plan to repot it in a much larger pot (25 gal) in the gritty mix. Should I attempt any root pruning? a gentle comb-out? What is the best way to root prune evergreens?

Thanks for any and all advice
