I buddy of mine gave me some advice to use roundup a few weeks before planting to kill off all the weeds in my garden plot prior to tilling. Now that I did, he can't remember telling me that. I'm scared to death I won't be able to grow anything this year. I tired a few flowers and they are still making it but I want to know up front before I throw and bunch of $ into the garden. I used roundup pro about 6 weeks ago.

I hope it is alright as I did the same thing. We had a downpour afterwards so I think it will work?

Everything will grow just fine. Round-Up generally doesn't persist for long in the soil. In most cases you can plant right after using it. As always when using anything that comes with a label, read the label ;-) The label will give you a lot of safety related information including how soon after use one can plant.

Many, many mistakes from using various products, particularly toxic ones like herbicides, fungicides etc. can be prevented just by reading that label. I will never forget the neighbor who killed his entire lanscape with RoundUp because he didn't read the label and assumed it was lawn safe.

Having said that I am not a fan of using chemicals in the garden when not necessary and I also am not a fan of extra work or expense. What is the purpose in using a weed killer to kill stuff that would be killed by the tilling anyway? ;-) Seems like more work than necessary to me.

It would be helpful to have some more information. You're assuming you have to have weeds and use weed killers. You don't have to have weeds, so if you could answer some questions we could figure out why have have weeds to begin with. Where do you live? What kind of grass do you have? What weeds do you have (grassy or broadleaf)? How are you watering (how often and for how long)? How high/low are you mowing? When were the last 2 times you fertilized and what did you use? I absolutely agree with organics. If you're concerned about the water then you might be concerned about using Milorganite. Milorganite is semi-processed sewage from Milwaukee. I use alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow) because it is rather inexpensive for me. You might use soybean meal if that is less expensive. The application rate is 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. You can use it as often as you want.

I've had the same thing happen with my peony bush but actually a service came to the townhouses where I Iive with a machine and sprinkled some stuff around. I had no idea what it was and a week later talking to a friend about it he said it was weed killer. He said the leaves on my bush are curled.. He says it should be ok. Ivan was reading up on it and it says after this happens dolsot with water getting leaves and everything. I hope it will be ok.

Been using it for years but did discover along the way, putting it on the day after a rain is extremely effective. It inhibits the growth that happens after a rain and kills the plant. Takes 1-3 days to kill the plants, but they don't come back On days when I'd put it on that were dry with little growth happening, it was like I never put it on. So wait till the day after a rain to apply it. Very effective. Most applications during spring time were effective all the time, summer applications were ineffective without rain the prior day. Basically, the plant has to be exhibiting growth for it to be effective. I'm in south Texas so nothing grows here during the summer, which is when the weeds are still there, but without the rain to cause a growth spurt, nothing happens.

Generally stay away from any weed n feed products. If you want to kill weeds, use a dedicated herbicide. If you want to fertilize, use a dedicated fertilizer. Generally you do not want to do those at the same time, although September is a little tricky. The rule of thumb for fertilizer is to use it on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. The rule of thumb for herbicide is to use it in mid April and, if you really, really need it, again in mid September. Some people think that using a wnf product in September saves time and money, but the problem is the timing. If you fertilize first a couple weeks prior to using the herbicide, the weeds will be growing and healthy. Weeds dies best when they are healthy, so waiting a couple weeks after fertilizing is helpful. As for the preemergent, YES, NOW. The spring wild flowers are often the product of plants which germinate during fall rainy weather. If you can prevent them now, that will reduce the amount of weeds next spring.

I agree with reading the label, but what I understand about Round-up is that it only works on plants. Once it hits the ground it's done. For your sake I hope that's correct. Best of luck.

Round-up is not active in the soil, just weeds or grass that are there.

The key word to look for in the label is "residual". Roundup is a non-selective and non residual, I think.

I created a folder on my computer and d/led the various labels for chemicals and such that I use and then I can search for certain crops, weeds, insects, etc. These are available in Adobe format, so in the search function you can choose between searching the current document or ALL of the pdf files which is very handy.

The soaring cost of diesel has forced farmers to cut back on cultivating and more towards chemicals. Most all corn, cotton and soybeans are now Roundup Ready.
