What to plant in my very large container?

Hello!

I just bought a sprawling ranch-style house with an elevated brick planting box that measures 8" x 15'- it runs along the entire front of the house! It faces south but is shaded. Further, the roof overhang prevents rain water from getting to it. Thus it is a shaded, dry, very long container! Being in zone 5 (Michigan), I'm unsure what I could successfully plant in it.

I would love to plant perennials that either trail over the side and/or have a height limit of 20". I will need to remove the existing soil (actually it is sand and rocks right now) and improve accordingly.

I would love replies with what others think will work or what has proven successful.

Thank you in advance!

Marjo
