Need Some Ideas for Privacy by Pool

Hi to All.

I just put an inground pool along the back of my yard. I also put up a 6' PVC fence 5' away from the edge of the pool. I was going to make a 2' high birm and plant various flowers and grasses. Now 2 of my rear facing neighbors decided to cut down ALL of their trees and it the space between my yard and theirs looks baren.

I was thinking of bamboo but running seems either to scary or way to high maintenence to control, and I'm worried about clumping bamboo not filling in and looking like giant heads of broccoli.

Does anyone have any ideas for trees or hedges that can grow 8'-12' tall bearing in mind that there is only 5' between the pool and fence and being aware of the roots next to a graphite composite pool wall.

I am on Long Island(Zone 7)

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am sure someone with more knowledge than I will chime in here and give you some good advice, but I would be so bummed if I were you! If there are no restrictions on how high your fence can be, you could add some decorative lattice work on top of the existing fence and plant a flowering vine on it....that would give you some privacy if it were even 3 feet higher. I have seen that done before. I think bamboo would be too invasive and you would be spending a lot of time trying to control it. I love bamboo though. Good luck with whatever you come up with.

Wow, you're boxed in but good with very little space to get out of it. The root spread of trees and shrubs tends to be many times the circumference of the plant - and I don't think you want a whole lot pushing against the pool. It's a nice fence, but if there aren't any HOA height restrictions maybe a cleverly designed and installed pergola would work -plant vines (even something simple like Morning Glories grow like gangbusters and give good coverage) over it and put a couple of chairs underneath.

A 5'planting area is pretty limiting since most of what gets tall also gets wide - constant pruning to keep anything from branching over the pool and dropping leaves, twigs, etc. Any possibility your neighbors will be replacing the trees they took out? Try the folks over on the shrubs forum, they may have some good ideas for you.

Most patios are set on a concrete slab or a sand and pebble base. Since patios are built at or around ground level, they don't require safety railings. While decks are primarily made of wood or a composite wood material or vinyl and often need railing. You have space in your backyard, you can make either deck or patio as per your choice.

The Techny Arborvitae could be planted in a row as a screen or standalone as a specimen. Mine are planted kind of intermediate to this. I have them on one of my property borders amongst other plantings (I did plant 2 next to each other). Ive got emerald green arborvitae and green giants and this can be thought of as intermediate solution to screen(more than EG, less that GG, also dense foliage like EG). Foliage is dense, a darker green, and elegant if I must say so myself. Love the (3d) look of the foliage and I get two tones of color as well. The color is real nice. Though I havent, if I could do it again, I would plant one as a specimen tree in a second. Depending on how much space you have/what other selections you have in mind other selections may be more appropriate(in regards to planting it as a specimen tree, lets face it there are other more beautiful conifers, though this is beautiful as well). Just thought Id throw it out there since they dont get mentioned much on here and Im quite happy with mine.

I like artistsharovna's second photo as a solution for this, but that still might be a bit much to execute. Here's an idea (I don't think I can find a photo of it) Get some hanging racks on wheels like they have in clothing stores and attach fabric hangings like beautiful old horse blankets, quilts or an oriental rug. You can push them together, overlap them or push them out of the way when you need to.

Well, arborvitae usually works, it’s green all year, but some may think it’s boring. Think about columnar shaped trees, such as Bradford pear, which has flowers on spring, glossy green leaves in the summer, and an beautiful gold color in fall. I’ve also used English hornbeams, which can be pruned to Four feet across. Amanogawa cherrie are gorgeous to. Just google “columnar trees” and you’ll find a lot of options.
