Help! big flowers growing but very small squash

I have zuchhini, yellow squash growing in containers...they have had very small squash n zuchs for the last 2 weeks, but the squash have stopped growing...they have remained at abt 3 - 4 inches long for last 2 weeks. Big yellow flowers grow, thereis a veg behind them....and then they seem to stop growing. Lower leaves getting kinda yellow and mottled...pls someone tell me what might be going on. I have been fertilizing w fert in water once per 9 days or so per fert instructions.

Same prob w tomatoes....they havent grown much beyond large marble size

I am just a nooobie her, but can tell you that the guru's are going to ask about your pot size and drainage, soil composition, fertilzer make-up - frequency, maybe temperature and watering amount/info; so might as well answer that now and avoid the delay. Might put your zone # in too.

I suspect that there will be attention the the fertilizer issue; I would suspend ferilizing for the moment until they advize.

Agree that they definitely aren't squash bugs or even squash bug nymphs. Those are easy to rule out from your description/information. But without seeing them it is just one of a hundred or more possibilities. Look up pics of aphids and thrips for example for comparison. As the squash grows, the ones with these bugs in the blooms eventually start turning brown at the tips and then the bloom or growing squash will just fall off. That could be just coincidence due to lack of pollination and age of the bloom but no way to know for sure. Are these male or female blooms the bugs are in or both? Susan, I'm in Camarillo -- cool coastal climate -- things take longer here to establish. Once-established, we rarely cut anything back. *** I think Vintage's estimate of Mme. Antoine Rebe is probably valid. It's maybe 4 ft. tall here (fairly wide), after at least 5 years. In my coastal climate, she mildews unfortunately, and may soon be gone. Rainbow -- We couldn't even get it to grow here. Wimpy. In the Sacramento City Cemetery, it climbs trees, but it's still very "spare." And it mildews. (I have great hopes for "Moser House Pink Stripe," which seems to be a more-vigorous 'Rainbow' but -- too soon to tell.) OTHERS: Rosette Delizy -- Said to be "one of the small Teas." It is easily 7-8 ft. here, tho quite upright. General Gallieni -- One we grew for years never got over 3 ft., and finally died. I'm sure it was virused. I've got one going now, from Cuttings sent by a friend. Still looks like it won't be big here, but at least it's healthy! Jeri

Not sure what your concern is. Where are you located? How long has the plant been growing? Since it is a winter squash variety that for most of us - unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere or planted it months ago -wouldn't be harvested until months from now it would be normal for the fruit to still be fairly small. Why not give us some more details? Dave
