How big/small are the 'not very large' Teas?

Papa Gontier? Rainbow? Mrs Antoine Rebe?

As I cruise well beyond my eligibility for Medicare and Social Security I am beginning to get tired of having to move all of my roses because I didn't do enough research into how big or how small they were gonna be. So, although PG is already in the ground, both Rainbow and Mrs Antoine Rebe are still waiting for me to dig them in. I see that they are described as "not very big", and I think Vintage's catalog says Mrs A.R. could "build to 4'", which gives me a clue, but...

Anyone who has these guys in the ground for long enough to be able to give me and idea what to expect and where to put them?

Susan, I'm in Camarillo -- cool coastal climate -- things take longer here to establish. Once-established, we rarely cut anything back.

*** I think Vintage's estimate of Mme. Antoine Rebe is probably valid. It's maybe 4 ft. tall here (fairly wide), after at least 5 years. In my coastal climate, she mildews unfortunately, and may soon be gone.

Rainbow -- We couldn't even get it to grow here. Wimpy.
In the Sacramento City Cemetery, it climbs trees, but it's still very "spare." And it mildews.
(I have great hopes for "Moser House Pink Stripe," which seems to be a more-vigorous 'Rainbow' but -- too soon to tell.)

OTHERS:

Rosette Delizy -- Said to be "one of the small Teas." It is easily 7-8 ft. here, tho quite upright.

General Gallieni -- One we grew for years never got over 3 ft., and finally died. I'm sure it was virused. I've got one going now, from Cuttings sent by a friend. Still looks like it won't be big here, but at least it's healthy!

Thanks, Jeri.

I do already have Rosette Delizy in the ground, and had been advised by Jerome that it would get "large", so I gave her room.

I will see if I can get Rainbow to hang on here.

Chiming in for my own interest as well as to offer a suggestion. Warning: I am a novice - my advice might be detrimental! Hopefully, those with greater expertise can chime in and offer an opinion. I put in a 12 x 10 pond years ago. Did it on the cheap. I used the thickest black plastic on a roll I could find. It is not unlike painter's drop clothes only a lot thicker. Every 2-3 years I have to replace it due to it wearing out or getting holes poked in it by my kids playing around. It was $30 or so for a monstrous roll I still haven't used completely. Why not drain down the pond, muck it out, layer the pond with the cheap liner and see what happens? Full disclosure - I go to the local pet store and buy 25-cent goldfish. The sales people are usually good about letting me select a combination of different markings so my gene pool is diverse. I started with four and had it quickly grow to 40-ish fish. For a while I fed them but found out one winter I didn't have to - I was hospitalized and too infirm to care for them and they survived on the nutrients in the pond. Trees grew over the pond in time and they would muck up the bottom and clog my submersible pumps. Eventually, the shade countered the algae growth and I didn't need to replace the pumps. A small number of plants in pots that were weighted to stay submerge provided a small amount of cover. A shrub rooted near the pond and branches dangled to the ponds surface. I trimmed them but left the shrub for shade/protection. The problems were not health of the water or the fish or the plants. The problems were related to leaves filling the pond and "filling it in" substantially each fall. Until Tulsa changed the chemicals in its water supply. The 110+ degree temps and leaks in the thin-ish liner required fillings 2-3 times a week. I forgot for a week and it got really low. The water I added overwhelmed the existing water, and the chemicals wiped out the remaining dozen fish. The plants didn't seem to mind but I now have a muck-covered liner (several layers of it, actually, as I'd just add the new one on top of the other, figuring the old ones would provide some protection from roots poking through). Is that a practical solution? Buy some cheap CHEAP liner. Connect them to cover the bottom of the pond. Drain and muck out the pond, drop the liner and let it fill in. === Or...fill in a big chunk of it and create a new "wall" out of liner with rocks, backfilling with rock, soil, sand, whatever. Plant plants that don't mind wet feet and let them live in a bed next to a much more manageable pond.

How big will TEAS Mme. Berkeley & Lombard get in coastal socal?

Lee, my Mme. Lombard is still immature, so I can't give you a coastal estimate. In the Sacramento City Cemetery, I've seen it maybe 5.5-6-ft. tall, and maybe 5-ft wide. I suspect that it may be some taller, late in the year. In late Fall, in the Sierra foothills, I've seen an old plant, up to maybe 6 ft tall -- tho pretty scrawny. On one thing I would warn you. Mme. Lombard is a wonderful bloomer, particularly generous in the Fall, Winter, and Early Spring. (My plant is resting, now.) But as a young plant in particular, she is going to mildew. She will mildew less as she matures, but she is likely always going to mildew to some extent, at some times of the year. I suspect she will likely always do some of that, here, but I'll forgive her, for the beauty, and the bounty, of the blooms. Jeri

Mine was new as a one gallon plant this spring, so I'm not any help on mature size. It is growing slowly and is the smallest of my new teas, at only about 1 ft x 1 ft currently. Nonetheless, it blooms constantly, with anywhere from 1/2 dozen to a dozen blooms on it at any given time. Seems to love my heat/humidity here...blooms last for quite awhile without frying when a lot of my other roses blooms are frying within a couple of days. Other teas I added in the yellow range this year are Rosette Delizy, Perle des Jardins and Mademoiselle Franziska KrÃÂ¼ger. I'm very pleased with all of them so far...all have been blooming regularly and all have been very heat tolerant. Right now, RD is the largest, followed by PdJ, MFK and then SdPN. SdPN, MFK and RD all age to pink, but PdJ retains its yellow coloring to the end. SdPN and MFK tend to get proliferated centers as they age. PdJ has a terrible reputation for balling, but even in my humidity and frequent rain, it hasn't had any problem with that yet. SdPN and MFK seem to be the least fragrant, but I may not be smelling them at the most opportune times...they are still so small, I have to get on the ground to take a whiff, so not sniffing them as often as my taller ones. (Not) pruning Teas; size of blooms

I always enjoy your posts and this one especially hit home with me! I grow many teas and have had them unpruned and in the ground for nearly 10 years. I live in Northern Ca and they are wonderful. My Mons. Tillier was huge over 5 ft tall. I was starting to worry about its' tallness but with the wonderful rains this year after years of drought, it was spectacular! Then it started to droop at the canes and became just about 4 feet still with wonderful blooms but the center started opening up and I started to wonder-should I be pruning? I had heard Cass Bernstein speak about pruning teas, and the teas at the Sacramento cemetery are wonderful with pruning so I too am thinking --do I need to prune them? I had never had this happen before either. Here is what I found on line http://rosefog.us/PrunedRoses/PrunedRoses.htm but it still doesn't answer the main question. I saw this post here that is interesting: http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1718329/pruning-teas-when-to-remove-canes-to-the-base. I still don't know what to do but might just lightly prune back and thin canes to lighten it slightly but not hard prune it. Maybe two brains are better than one. Let me and us all know what you do. Don't know quite what to make of 'Rosette Delizy'. My older plant from either Ashdown or Roses Unlimited is a tidy, smallish plant. My second plant (which I know to be from Antique Rose Emporium) is at least half the age of my first plant, but is easily TWICE the size. They're located in different parts of my garden, but the conditions are similar.

Susan, my Mme Antoine Rebe gets only morning sun now and no sun after the time changes in the fall, being on the north side of the house. It is almost 5' tall and maybe a bit wider. It'll be 3 years in August since I planted her. She's not very bulky or leafy with an open structure. How much of this is due to sun deprivation and how much is her character I don't know, but she flushes out pretty regularly. Her fluttery semi-double red flowers are so cheery. She causes no problems except to grow into the path (which is my fault not hers), and she doesn't mind being lopped off on that side. I don't feel like I can move her because then she'll get even less sun.

I tried Rainbow, too. I don't think it lasted two weeks in my pot ghetto. I hope you have success with it.

Thanks all.

I will do my best not to be disappointed if Rainbow is a dud; I will try to put her where I won't be devastated if I lose her -- ha.

Since mildew is a very infrequent visitor here, I am really really looking forward to seeing Mrs Antoine Rebe grow and thrive. Now it seems to me I can count on her taking up somewhere between 4 and 5 sq feet of real estate, I can start figuring out where her color will work best.

And, as for Rosette Delizy, she can take up as much room as she wants. She is planted in a corner of the property between the street (in front) and a field (to the south) and shares space with Twilight Mist (which only blooms once and then is gone until the next year) plus a bunch of potted cannas and a couple of bamboos in pots. Whatever size she chooses to be will be just fine.

Papa Gontier has much the same freedom where he is. Heck, there used to be a Mimosa tree where I planted him, so he has room and so do I ....

Windeaux -- I have been TOLD that there are varying clones of Rosette Delizy -- some more vigorous than others, some more colorful than others.

Ours is from the Antique Rose Emporium, and is very colorful, in all but the hottest weather, wherein she can fade to still pretty pastels.
