Please help!

Today I was in a well known home improvement chain to buy potting soil to transplant a rose and buy a bag-a-bug to save my roses from Japanese Beetles. Well anyway, in the corner were two very brown but a little green Patio Gardenias. I went ahead and requested to buy them at a very discounted price because they were just going to throw them out. I took them home and pruned all of the dead off. They stand about 3 ft tall, in VERY small pots, soil is very moist from the store. I have pruned all the dead stuff off of them and now I just need to know what to do to revive them! The trunk is still green, new growth is showing up all over both trees. Also, someone made them into standards and tied them to sticks. The plastic used for fastening were cutting into the main "trunk" of the gardenia plant. I removed these and replaced them with loosely fastened "twisties" like on bread bags. Please help. I am so used to roses and never did gardenias before! I just want these to live!

Actually, gardenias are tough, tough plants. I don't know why they have the reputation of being hard to grow, I guess because too many people have gotten a small, potted one and then proceeded to torture it by keeping it indoors in hot, dry, dark conditions, and then often overwatering and rotting the roots as it sat in a decorative pot cover -- the typical Valentine's Day/Easter/Mother's Day gift plant thing.

They should bounce back with vigor. I would just pot up to a larger, appropriate sized pot, use a really good quality potting mix like ProMix that is peat and perlite based, and keep them watered. They like to get just barely dry between waterings.

I assume you're going to keep them outdoors for the summer -- they will be ok in full sun to partial shade, as long as it's not cooking in extreme afternoon heat.

I a few weeks as they recover, I would start feeding about every 10 days with a liquid fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Use some Osmocote, too, if they don't have some from the grower already. The two biggest issues you will encounter with gardenias is 1) that they turn chlorotic easily if the soil pH goes too high, that is a problem in areas with hard tap water, use acid plant fertilizers and trace elements to combat this and 2) they are bug magnets, aphids, scale, white fly, and mites love them. I spray a couple times a year with one of the newer class of insecticides/miticides such as Bayer 3 in 1 Insect/Disease/Mite spray. And I always put imadicloprid in the soil spring and fall. That keeps bugs away.

The winter best in cool, dryish conditions. They are temperate zone plants and need a dormancy, but they can't tolerate deep freezing to any significant extent, most are zone 8 or zone 9, such as the really common variety 'August Beauty' which is probably what yours are. I winter mine at about 40-50 degrees, let them get quite a bit drier than in summer but don't let them wilt. When I bring them in in the fall, I generally will prune the top back about 50% just for size control, since they grow rapidly in the summer and my space for wintering is small, but that is completely optional.

Yeah my gardenia was in a pot in the shade for YEARS with very few flowers and yellow green leaves (probably due to being root bound and a little neglected). Last year I put it in the ground (and this ground is very lacking of nutrients). This year it is green with tons of flowers.

Next year Im going to concentrate more on container gardening. All my older plants are in containers and suffering. Ive been reading about root pruning vs. potting up. Next spring Im going to take all the oldies out for a good pruning. But the gardenia made it into the ground. Sometimes when I sniff a gardenia I almost pass out because of the potency.

The adventures in concrete continue. I figured out that there is indeed an overflow pipe. It'll need some attention, though, because it's metal and pretty rusted. I've thought about putting a PVC pipe over it as a sleeve -- both to back it up for its eventual failure and to adjust the depth of the pond deeper. But that's taking a back seat to the concrete. Oh, the concrete. So, yes, it's amazing that it wasn't leaking more when we first got into the house. I started picking at some spots in the interior that looked like they were about flake off anyway. Which revealed a patchwork of patches. Chipping away some more revealed layers of paints (thoroseal?), roofing tar (?!), more thin layers of concrete, fiberglass, more tar with gravel...got it all down to a layer that wouldn't come off with a cold chisel and hammer. Ow...my back. I'm soon to the point of finding a way to make it hold water again. I'm coming around to the thought that further layers of concrete covered with "goop" might not be a great idea. I'd like to find a way to put a liner in it, but there are some really large edge rocks that are mortared in that hang over, that would be over the water line. I'll post a picture when I get closer to addressing that issue. I've spent some time pulling out the intake lines and shoring up the "pump house." Turns out, the half-assed mortared walls fell apart as soon as I took the large rock roof off. Holy cow...I had my head under that thing when I took the old pump out! Here's the new set up, with a new bulkhead pipe, extension of the pipe to the waterfall, new electrical outlet and concrete floor: I had to extend the water line that runs up to the waterfall and used a rubber coupling on the existing ABS line to extend it with PVC. Thought about concreting it in (to shore up the pond wall and surrounding embankment), but I think I'll wait until I get a pump attached to make sure it works. I'll soon start trying to make it hold water. I think I've learned the lesson that more layers of concrete might not be a great idea. Putting a liner might be the right call. There will be challenges with some big overhanging edge rocks that cemented in. The liner could go 'over' them, but I wonder if there's a way to tuck the liner in under the edge and have it stay put?

Anyone who has ACTUALLY READ and tried to understand my posts on the fig cutting cleaning & storage procedures and who has actually read the "details" of my writings on rooting methods ....should already know WHY it is important to clean cuttings. I have absolutely no desire to repeat any of the details again for the sake of argument. Anyone who really desires to know why......perform a search function on my GW user-name and Clorox and you should find my posts on this matter. Those posts will lead to other good posts written by other forum members. Too, I don't really care what the so called professional rooters do. I know what works very well for me and am working on propagation methods that may well be of interest to them. Funny how some people want to criticize and seek fault rather than try to really understand alternate methods that achieve very high success rates.......with success measured in the number of fully harden off fig trees and not simply measured by the number of cuttings that manage to grow some roots. What I have suggested is practical, very simple (requires no special equipment...like those terrible heating pads, or expensive green houses), and consistently yields very good results. What I have posted is sound and easily reproduced by anyone. Anyone who desires to reduce or completely eliminate mold problems during fig rooting, should consider doing some of the things that I have suggested......simply because THEY WORK real well. Temperature, atmospheric pressure, absolute humidity, relative humidity, moisture, air (oxygen), cutting quality, and rooting environment are some of the variables that affect rooting success and potential molding issues. Most of these parameters are quite easy to control or manipulate to your advantage..... if you know how. It really is not that complicated. Forgot to add that he saved us money by incorporating all of our needs and many wants without going over in sq footage. He also came up with architectural details that would give the house character very inexpensively. He loaded us up on storage and made the most use out of stadard windows. Also incorporated brick and stone with hardi in a way that kept the expense down but provided a huge visual impact. It is also unique from the other houses in the neighborhood and area, but still blends nicely so that if we ever resale we will standout among the homogenous designs most builders put up in our area. So that will payoff later. I have had someone on my hoa with a house significantly bigger than mine rave over the design and wish she could move in. Also he could have...but we chose not to do this... make it so the first floor was the only floor finished so that we could finish the second and basement later without anyone being the wiser. However we lost our minds and now are finishing the whole basement.

I'd do this: If your likely customer is the type to buy this place and add a few more rooms, it means they probably have children. I just can't imagine a family not really, really missing a dining room. And the enormous utility room seems like such a waste. So, I made your utility room into a dining room. 1) I stacked the washer and dryer and moved it to a closet in the hallway. It's right there clustered with the bathroom and kitchen, so running the pipes to the new washer location shouldn't be a big deal. Also, it's closer to the bedrooms -- with the original utility closet, you'd have to carry your clothes from the bedrooms to the kitchen to wash them. 2) The furnace and water heater are now in a closet rather than having an entire room to themselves. They are still very close to their original locations, so hooking them up shouldn't be bad. If they need any extra room over what I allotted, you could expand this closet into the pantry/china cabinet space like this: 3) I also moved the garage door to a more convenient location. Now someone who is coming in with groceries can easily walk into the kitchen, but everybody else won't be funneled through the kitchen or into the side of the dining room table. Voila, dining room! Does the utility room have a big double window like the kitchen (it's hard to tell)? If so, that'll be really lovely to have that in the dining, and with the wall separating the kitchen from the utility room gone, that'll be a lot of light flooding around that whole space.
