My UC Davis cuttings are doing well. I need at least 60 containers. Do I want to pay 10 dollars each for them? NO!! Do I believe in air root pruning? YES!!

After hours of research on the web, I ended up calling the UK this morning, and I got a great price for 100 white, sun reflecting, air pruning containers. 10 gallon size. That was the best price I could find. Most containers are much more costly. Yes, I need to meet the minimum order of 100, but... so OK! I have extra containers.

I can't put the link in here because this is the first post, and I will get slapped, and I think that is a stupid rule, but so be it. Google Proptek containers, and then go to pricing. Then go to contacts. This is a really stupid rule that I can't give you a link. But so be it.

Of what are they made? Plastic, fabric?

That was a good question, and I searched the site to find out what they are made from with zero luck.

They are translucent and the light prunes the roots, so not plastic, and they let air in, but you can see air holes are punched around the sides. I would guess they are made of some patented proprietary fabric, either fiberglass or a strong blend of fabrics, possibly nylon, silk? They have to be strong because they have handles to lift the containers.

In the nursery photos they show, the containers do not show dirt leaching out, as would happen with cotton. Those pots stay white! I do know that they are very light weight and translucent, not made from landscape fabric like the smart pots.

They do double duty. Light prune (roots like it dark), and air prune. I also like that option for the weed control cover because it also reduces evaporation, so you can water less.

So what is your guess about what they are made from?
Nylon? Silk? It has to be strong and translucent. I say Nylon. Silk is waaay to expensive!!

I think that the dust will add some valuable micro minerals. Just don't expect things to pop super high and fast. As far as aluminum goes, clay soil has perhaps 12 - 14 % aluminum in bound up forms. Your dust likely has aluminum too...not to worry in normal ph soils. I believe that Azomite listed 6 ppm in lead which is likely to be less than your soil already has. Likely most soils already contain arsenic, and minor contents of cadmium, mercury, and such. If you presently live on planet earth, you would have a hard time avoiding them 100%.

I think tile can be quite beautiful. But for ease of maintenance we went with cultured granite surrounds (already had a Corian granite-look sink vanity) and for the shower, a cultured granite showerpan. Contractors used cement board. Due to high labor costs in our area going with Swanstone or CG worked out to be cheaper than a professional tile installation. With CG the cost included installation, no small matter. It took three strong men to move in a 38" custom neo-angle pan! We considered Swanstone - we have Swanstone kitchen countertops and sink - but they did not do custom sizes, so we went with the CG which looks similar. Most people, even contractors, think it's Corian. It's very slightly shinier than Corian due to the gelcoat. My spouse loathes tile. If we bought a house with a tiled shower surround the first thing we would do is rip it out; he will not tolerate it in bathrooms or kitchens (he went to hotel & restaurant mgmt school so he's big on the whole non-porous idea). We have had the CG surrounds for 13 yrs and they are almost effortless to maintain. We don't even have to squeegee it. Just spray after use, maybe 2x/yr I run a wet sponge over the walls before I exit. Still look brand-new, too. Recently my spouse remarked it was the best of all the changes we've made to our home in the 25 yrs we've been here.

I ordered two rugs from them, both bound sizes of karastan wool carpet I had in other parts of the house. The rugs came quickly and were exactly as pictured. I knew in advance, like you, what I should receive and it was the same carpet, only nicely bound at the karastan factory. In a stock size. I would absolutely order from them again.

OMG! You made me think, and I do have a sewing machine. Go to ebay. There are tons of Fiberglass fabrics. Some mesh, some not. I'm backing off of nylon and going with fiberglass. There is enough of that stuff for sale on Ebay for all of us!!

Here is the deal. I have cuttings in air, root pruning zip set bands. 2" x 2" x 12". So the things have no room to grow, but they are growing well. I think, rather than putting them straight out in 10 gallon, I should start with 3 gallon. If I can sew those bags, why would I not?

Looking at their pictures, it seems that neither the air pruning nor the light pruning works very well....they show that the roots that reach the side continue to grow down the side of the pot. Am I missing something?

OK, I read their site a little closer...they are NOT claiming air pruning. In fact, they claim that air pruning pots are a bad idea for trees that are to be planted out. In addition, they are using the term "light pruning" to refer to an anecdotal observation of stunted root growth when exposed to light, and the apparent lack of circling roots in their containers.

Alexander3, in the photo on the site, you can see holes in the pots on the sides, which indicates air pruning, but I agree light pruning is probably the main factor in the success of planting in these pots. Roots are like moles. They like it dark, and when they hit light, they stop, and branches appear. I believe that is the concept. Whatever it is, those pots do not promote root circling, aka root bound, issues.

My vines will stay in their containers, and I will move them to larger sizes, and they will never be planted in the ground, so encouraging root mass, to me, is a good thing.

Now, do you think these translucent containers are made from fiberglass cloth? Strong, and light. Hmmmmmm
