Bean tower..when seeds germiante will they grow out of a hole?
Comments (16)hmm makes sense Jim...I am sure that the dirt would fill in the void someday..but I am not so sure that a bean could crawl thru a 3/4" di. hole..lol..my bad. Sorry Purple you know about snoozing...But It sure is nice to know that I am not the only "city dwelling limited space guy" seeking vertical growing habits. So I built the tower yesterdy. its is about a 6" square. I am thinking that the wood will hold the moisture fairly well. Not as good as PVC pipe. But its what I had to work with. reflecting on the problems of inserting a plant. I cut 5/8" x 1/2" conduit, galvanized, into 4" pcs. Packed them half way, inserted a bean seed, and finished packing them. I will insert this into the holes upon first signs of growth. If I was to do it over. I would use 1-1/2 PVC cut into short pieces. Drill the hole on a angle so that the plant will grow out of it. My other thought was to cut up 16 ounce water bottles and force them into the hole. If there was two halfs they may be able to be made removable after the plants are well rooted. AS for growing pole beans in the tower. I have a 3 foot x 6ft high, u-shape metal trellis now. That packs 9 lineal feet into a 3 ft. sq. foot print and I can get to all sides of it. PB. I believe that the bush bean stems will bend over under their own weight and learn to adjust. ( hopes it not a big wind that adjusts them) lol I am thinking that this method would be great for Romaine lettuce. It could be placed out of the heat. Maybe it need's to be on wheels...lol..4 towers on a 2' x 4"..the " Tower Dolly" ???? only 39.95...plus S&H..easy assembly instructions included...and 2 free Ginseng Knifes CrAzY LaRrY...See MorePenstemon 'Sweet Joanne'--overwintering?
Comments (4)ispahan wrote: I just planted a few Penstemon 'Sweet Joanne' in full sun and well draining soil. For those of you who grow it, how did it overwinter for you? Funny you mention this plant (SJ) as I bought and planted two of them *very* late this past fall...specifically October 29 2011 and I *think* I see evidence this spring that they both made it through my zone 5 winter (albeit a very moderate winter this year). So your zone 6a should be a breeze for them....See MoreNeed advice for my Kalanchoe blossfeldiana
Comments (15)It's making smaller leaves now bc the warehouse that grows them pumps them with lots of fertilizers and stuff. Im in the FL Keys and I never have any small leaves unless yhat part the plant has gotten knocked off or got a kink on the stem. I have an 8×3' harden on each side of our front door. One side is nothing but difft types of Kalanchos and they get Big and bloom all at once for the hummingbirds to come in spring. But remember that everything you pull a leaf you have a potential for a whole new new plant or more. Its crazy o just stuck the leaf on top of an empty bottle and wait. Its cool how they make a whole plant from between the ridges. My neighbor brought me 3 leaves from Hawaii about 15 years ago. I'm now in engaged with them, but its OK, I give lots away and the key Deer don't eat it! Win for me. Good luck, I know its been over 4 years but I still thought I'd answer your question. I hope 2020 goes away fast, its Dec 11....2021 can't come fast enough ✌💚🍄🎅🎄 Happy Holidays everyone...See More"Dark Towers" Penstamon -- young new roots Zone 5a
Comments (15)This is my experience with differences between p Husker's Red and Dark Towers. HR has dark green foliage with red undertones. If I remember correctly, the flowers are closer to white than the more pink DT. I believe the photo of DT is accurate. The foliage is very dark. To me how these both come through winter and mature during the growing season is striking. HR was very weak in spring ( I observed it over at least 3 seasons). It never grew to its 'advertised' size with any vigor. I remember replanting its 'offshoots' every spring and the root systems were very small. Finally I discarded the plants because they were not worth the work. They never grew vigorously after the first season. Dark Towers is a great improvement. It comes through winter vigorous, emerges with good sized, healthy and vigorous foliage. I transplanted two last fall into holding beds, on the late side of autumn. They came through well and developed big 'offsets' that are practically full sized plants now. I haven't separated them from the mama plant, but neither one seems to have suffered during a horrible record breaking hot summer when they received minimal water. I think the flower color in DT is more interesting....if you are ok with pink instead of white. I think its a 'good' pink not pepto bismol or fushcia...See More- 12 years ago
