What are you planning on growing this year?

I am doing pretty much the same as last year. Cukes, toms, peppers, carrot and beans.

Actually, other that the Burpee Hybrid II cukes, I will be trying lemon cukes, English cukes, Dragon's Tongue Bean and Purple String Beans.

The lemon cukes look too cute *not* to try, yeah? I am also trying them out this year :D

This is my first year of gardening, and I think I might be a little over-ambitious in my choices.

Of course tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and beans are there. I am also trying out eggplant, squashes, melons, okra, cut-and-come-again salads, a variety of herbs, brassicas, and root vegetables and some flower friends to help the veggies out. I don't expect everything to grow, but I do hope something nice happens :D

I usually grow, tomatoes, peppers (hot & sweet), cucumbers, broccoli, summer squash, winter squash, bush beans & pole beans. However, I'm trying almost all new varieties I've never tried before for each veggie. A new veggie to me this year is asparagus peas. I'm also trying scallions for the first time.

Paperwhite, I have guvar seeds -it is a nylon (?) variety, I brought from India in 1999. The seeds are stored dessicated in a refrigerator and have 30-40% germination. My seeds were started in peat pots before going in the garden. I am afraid I have planted them very close (For Tindolas, best bet is to sart from a root cutting. This is my first year for tindola. I discovered an almost dry, abandoned cutting languishing in a dark spot behind a motel. With great difficulty I have nursed it back to life. Now it has the first green twigs with small leaves. Hopefully it will mature during this season such that I can share cuttings with friends. Later in the season I will try to air-layer well -established shoots. I am a newbie at propagating plants & therefore would like to know more about how to multiply tindola plant.

Well, hopefully, the above ground pool is being taken down this spring,making more for brugs & other plants. The pond needs to be redone. I hope the fishies are still alive under all that ice! I'm a little worried about some of the brugs in the cellar. It's not cool enough for them to go dormant,but leaf production is non-existent or slow going.The few leaves that grow I take off because of aphids.Some of the branches look dried & dead. I'm guessing the growth will have to come from the base/roots,if they're alive.The ones in BOB(Bucket of brugs) in the water with the bubbler look better. Not all, but most. The ones that go in the ground will definitely be in a bucket with side holes,not bottom holes for the roots to grow through. Last fall I practically killed myself digging them out of the ground. The roots were buggars to cut through growing out of bottom holes. Karyn can say,"I told you so."LOL The brugs I put in the ground with no containers,most I couldn't even dig up. I sawed them off close to ground level and did BOB. My red sanguinea is a year old from seed!Since digging it up to bring inside,two branches died back to the main trunk.It was too leggy anyway. Now it's sitting in a ground level north side cellar window.Will move to south facing today for more sun.I fed it seaweed extract the other day. I didn't give it much fert. over the summer.Hopefully it will keep growing strong. Theresa

I had Kelvin Floodlight from 2 different sources and the one I had purchased from a local nursery really looked nothing like the tuber I had received in a trade. The flower never looked as full and the petals would often turn brown. I tossed that one. My Candlelight from Swan Island rarely looks as pretty as it does in the catalog. Mostly it looks like dirty yellow but once it awile it throws a nice orange/yellow blend. I don't really love it but I keep planting it every year, probably because it is the first one to bloom every summer and it seems to store very well since I have had that one for years. As for the late bloomers, I plan on starting the biggest AA's in the house in late March. I did that with Show N Tell last year and it was blooming profusely by July. I made a list of the ones I'm going to start early. I don't have room to start them all or I would. As for your Citron Du Cap, I would love to trade you something for that one. I have been eyeing that one for a few years and would like to try it. I have quite a few dahlias in storage and hopefully will have a lot of varities to trade in the spring. What squash will you grow next year?

I'm hoping to retry growing some butternut(autumn glow) and triple treat pumpkin. I tried getting a late crop of autumn glow butternut this year by seeding 4 plants mid august but only one plant bore fruit. They are about 3 inches long in a container and wont probably make it by the time the first freeze come along. I'd also like to plant some netted pumpkin again this year. Melonette Jaspee de Vendee and some winter luxury pie pumpkin. Anyone know if those two pumpkins are related? But they are C. pepo and thus susceptible to vine borers. I won't be planting any C. maximas again because they take too much space and are prone to insect attacks. The Seminole pumpkin squash sound very interesting but might not have enough time to mature in the northeast US. Has any one tried the delicata types "Honey boat and Sugar loaf" varieties and can give me comparisons on their tastes as compared to each other and the common butternut(sweetness, texture, firmness)? All my honey boat squash plants wilted under mildew pressure this year. The delicatas I've tried from the supermarket were bland and probably grown with too much water. So, so far C. moschatas are my surest bet. Around here the supermarkets sell kabocha squash for 80 cents a pound and they are super sweet. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't just plant flowers instead of squash. One more question: The Autumn glow butternut I planted that grew large enough to bear fruit bore male flowers first. However, the female flowers that came about a week after opened up before any of the male flowers. Could this be due to the shorter days of Autumn? The plants are incredibly compact, no more than 40 inches long with very short tendrils. And the male flowers are very different from regular squash flowers. The flowers are very fleshy and heavy. I've ordered tomato, eggplant and pepper plants from Burpee. I'll buy some squash and grape tomato plants from the local farmers market. I'm going to try and grow cucumbers from seeds and direct sow carrots and lettuce.

Wow, I thought I was ambitious with about 30 different varieties of tomatoes and 20 or so different varieties of peppers.

This will be our first garden. We are planting 2 kinds of tomatoes, 3 kinds of peppers, cukes, zucchini, limas, 2 kinds of snap beans, musculin(as far as I can tell this is just a mix of different salad greens) and some herbs. I'm also planning on doing some watermelons.

Lots o' tomatoes, gourds, watermelons, true cantaloupe, muskmelons, cukes, flowering vines, flowers, beans, herbs, corn, peas, and various greens. And that's in a 75x23 plot! I have my work cut out for me. :)

Well, new to me this year are broccoli, canteloupe, tomatoes, and peas.

Things I grew last year, but am trying new varieties of include lettuce, bush and pole beans, peppers, carrots, and cucumbers.

I think it will end up being 35 - 40 different kinds of veggies, plus the herbs, and my garden is only 60 sq. ft.!!! Might have to go buy more large containers, you think? LOL

I have a small garden, really just spaces in between dwarf fruit trees. I also have about 12' of fence to put snap beans on (my first try at them) I chose Fortex. I have some 7' poles I had been intending to train pillar roses on out back, those will be for lima beans (another first) King of the Garden and Christmas. I have purple and yellow bush snap beans I may get in three of each if I'm lucky. The rest I'll list:
Minnesota Midget melon (3' vines, personal size tasty melons)
Cherokee Purple tomato from cuttings
Azoycha yellow tomato from seed
Early Girl, maybe, still undecided on this one
Amaranth tricolor/burgundy for salad greens
Zephyr summer squash

What, no spinach? You can plant it as soon as the ground thaws enough. Gets you out of the house and back in shape for the rest of the garden as it warms up. A whole lot better than the store bought frozen stuff and just forget the canned, it's horrible. Happy gardening.

Will be growing one each of 14 tomato varieties. I've never grown the same variety twice but this year I will grow neves Azorean Red and Rostova again and probably every year hereafter. The Mrs will be growing her usual 150 korean Hot pepper plants. She makes her own Hot sauce and of course Kimchee.She also grows Korean eggplant and Adapazari Squash. For something new I will be trying the Uminami Cucumber which alledgedly grows 2-3 ft in length and 3-5 inches in diameter. Almost forgot we will be growing the Insuks Wang Kong bean which was named for the Mrs. I've been distributing them all over the country as well as several places in Europe,for free of course.
