In zone 5 can you leave them inground-year round?

I tested the epsom salts theory of making plants more cold tolerant than without--with amazing results!! This in combination with making sure the plants are well hydrated going into a near-freezing cold spells this winter. I 'pumped up the volume' in the fall w/the E. salts...do you use E. salts?

Shawn this going to be my 2nd growing season, or wait. It IS the second growing season already when I look at my little seedlings lol.

If the bees pollinate my brugs so be it. This year I will not fiddle with it. There are so many great hyperdizers out there. Coming up with wonderful brugs. To me it is more important that I could come up with a more virus resistant and heat tolerant brug. But time to learn about that and having it. Just not so for me.So why bother. I rather just enjoy @ this stage in my brug life! Who knows what I will do down the road thou.

Growing out seed x and keeping track of it all I believe will keep me WAY busy. Remember I have so many more things I have to do to my yard so just enjoying and watching them grow will give me all the happiness I need this year.

Maybe remembering more and not having to look it up over and over again ha ha ha ha

Gonna enjoy my greenhouse and playing around with stuff in there.

That is a loaded question and I have lined up a few testers, tossed out a few ideas to a couple of folks and will continue the Datmansia project with the new third generation of seeds. Still in search of that variegation from seeds here. Starting fewer seeds and just enjoying the ones I have obtained.

Not gonna do anything major with my brugs, but am redoing a flower bed out in the front yard so I can put out my bananas, palms and agaves...They will get hot afternoon sun so it will be perfect!!...I'm REALLY excited to get the bananas out there.

Then we gotta finish the pond, work on the vegie garden...so on and so on and so on......

COME ON SPRING!!!!!

I'll just be happy to get them all outside & planted so I can see what the 08 seedlings turn into. I want to graft a few things & a few unrelated things to each other (brugs, Dats, anything else I have that is related at the time) & then try pollinating them (hoping it will just confuse the heck out of the plant & it will take). I have bags to save pollen ready, I have bunches of seeds of all kinds of crosses (I'll start a little earlier than last year). I am planning a big veggie garden for pesticide-free food & I will be helping with the Master Gardener veggie classes & demo garden. I also have lots of new kinds of seeds to try from another forum's seedbox & trades of all kinds. We (by we I mean DH) have the greenhouse to put up & 4 foot picket fence for in between us & next door (they'll help & are supplying the posts) & around the front yard (try & carry off a big brug over a fence!). The house needs painted, the porch needs to be replaced, the new furnace still isn't in (or the woodstove) & all the other endless problems that go with owning a house. I really need to clean the basement & attic & have a huge yard sale. Or win the lottery big-time & go on a cruise with my friends while the new house is being built. LOL

Wow, Linda... life is so boring, when you have nothing to do! LOL!

I'm going to get to work on all that extra yard I have just added, and find permanent homes for about 25 cuttings. I do have a few seeds to pray over... we'll see how that goes. I feel the pressure, as I have never been much of a seed person, and these were a gift from Karyn. I hope I don't let her down!

Linda you reminded me that grafting is someting I would like to try too. I think it may be above my skill level. I haven't even read about how to do it yet but I am going to read up on it sometime and maybe dabble in that a little bit too.

Everyone who is starting seeds trust me they are easy. Soak them overnight and peel as much cork off as you can. Then put them in moistened mix with perlite mixed in and barely cover. Put the containers you have them planted in into one of those trays with a clear plastic cover to help hold in the humidity. Put them in a sunny window or under lights and they will usually sprout within a few weeks. I take tem out of the dome when they are too tall and touching the lid. Plant them into separate containers when they have a few sets of small leaves. Usually when I start other plants from seed they get leggy but brug seeds don't get that way for me. This is also my first year with seed so I can't tell you what to do from here. I do know you do not want to fertilize until spring when you can put them outside.

Shawn, I've grafted other things over the years. It's pretty easy, you should try it. I want to get a few different kinds of apples to graft to my tree (Yellow Transparent).

Great question. I am going to plant most of my brugs in the ground and really provide a lot of fertilizer and water in hopes of seeing magnificent gardens full of brug blooms. I also want to try my hand at hybridizing brugs this summer.

I really have to work hard this summer to fine tune my gardens. Also, I want to add a lot more trees in hopes of creating a bit of romance in the gardens.

I'm still learning what I can and can not do with my greenhouse and sure hope I will have a LOT of perennial and annual plants to transfer to my gardens by the end of winter. So far things are looking very good thanks to a friend who has shared a bunch of seeds with me.

Well, hopefully, the above ground pool is being taken down this spring,making more for brugs & other plants.
The pond needs to be redone. I hope the fishies are still alive under all that ice!
I'm a little worried about some of the brugs in the cellar. It's not cool enough for them to go dormant,but leaf production is non-existent or slow going.The few leaves that grow I take off because of aphids.Some of the branches look dried & dead. I'm guessing the growth will have to come from the base/roots,if they're alive.The ones in BOB(Bucket of brugs) in the water with the bubbler look better. Not all, but most.
The ones that go in the ground will definitely be in a bucket with side holes,not bottom holes for the roots to grow through. Last fall I practically killed myself digging them out of the ground. The roots were buggars to cut through growing out of bottom holes. Karyn can say,"I told you so."LOL
The brugs I put in the ground with no containers,most I couldn't even dig up. I sawed them off close to ground level and did BOB.
My red sanguinea is a year old from seed!Since digging it up to bring inside,two branches died back to the main trunk.It was too leggy anyway. Now it's sitting in a ground level north side cellar window.Will move to south facing today for more sun.I fed it seaweed extract the other day. I didn't give it much fert. over the summer.Hopefully it will keep growing strong.

Theresa, Oh goody! Someone who understands that you can actually WANT to remove a pool for plants. LOL Everyone thought I was crazy but it was a 30' round & it took up a lot of room & no one else wanted to clean it but me. I have about 12 raised beds where it was. Much more efficient use of the space.

LOL I used to want a pool but everyone who has one thinks they are a PITA so I can see why you would want to take it out too. Plus around here they are unusable for most of the year anyways, maybe they are worth the trouble down south where you can use them more.

The pool was great when the kids were smaller and I worked from home. No time to sit at a swim club. I would drag my sewing machine outside to the table and work out there while they were swimming. Now we use it for a couple of weeks in the beginning,then it gets too hot & everyone wants to sit in the air conditioning! LOL I wish mine was 30',mine's only around 16'oval.
