How to start cotton from seed indoors

Hi All,

I just received my cotton seeds and they are absolutely huge!! Plus, covered with fuzzy, green cotton - very pretty. From what I've read, I will need to start these inside to have any hope of seeing cotton bolls by first frost. Does anyone have any hints? How deep do they need to go? Should I try to get the green fuzz off first?

I'm very excited to grow green cotton! I don't really *need* to, but I can't resist it.

I grew some here in Dover, DE. not a huge crop but a neat crop to grow. started it mid april

Hi golfcole, "How do you keep your zinnias so compact?" I think the most important thing is to give them enough light. That means keep the fluorescent lights within a few inches of them. And I have my timers set to give them very long "days", with 18 hours of light and 6 hours of dark. This time of year the sun is higher in the sky and you probably won't get any significant amount of direct sunlight through a window, so just concentrate on keeping the fluorescent tubes close to them. Nutrition-wise, use a balanced formula, fairly dilute. I give them an initial dose of Better-Gro Orchid Plus, one teaspoon per gallon. Then I switch to one-quarter teaspoon per gallon for maintenance. When they start to bud out, I blend Better-Gro Orchid Plus with Better-Gro Orchid Blooming formula, which has a higher percentage of Phosphorous. Zinnias are heavy feeders, and in containers you can expect to have to feed them every two or three days. Be on the lookout for deficiency symptoms. You might need to add some soluble Calcium, like Calcium nitrate, if your water supply doesn't contain some soluble Calcium. My Premier ProMix has a little Calcium in it, but only enough for about three weeks of zinnia growth. Also, be on the lookout for Boron deficiency symptoms. Good complete nutrient formulas contain some Boron, but apparently zinnias like twice as much Boron as orchids. I use a little Boric Acid powder purchased from a drugstore. I make a stock solution of one-quarter teaspoon Boric Acid per gallon, and add one cup of that stock solution to each gallon of complete nutrients for the initial treatment and half a cup per gallon for maintenance. Boric acid powder dissolves very slowly in cold water, so I heat a cup of water in the microwave, pour that in an empty water bottle, add the quarter teaspoon of Boric acid powder to the hot water, swish it around until it dissolves, and add that to the gallon jug and fill it up to create a gallon of stock Boric acid solution. Discard the water bottle. You don't want to drink any of the Boric acid. Some water supplies have plenty of Boron and Calcium in the water, so it can be helpful to have access to an analysis sheet for your water. I have to add both to our well water. Hi HS, My guess as to why the plants got leggy in the first place is because they simply were not getting enough light; they had to reach for more light. Most folks leave their fluorescent lights on at least 16 hours a day and probably more often 18 hours a day. The distance of the lights (3 to 4 inches above the seedlings) was probably okay, but a little closer (2 to 3 inches) may have been better. I just don't think 12 hours of light was enough. Regarding your thoughts about trying to "simulate the same daylight they will get when moved outdoors in April", you really can't compare artificial lighting to the amount of sunlight they'll get when you put them outside. When moved outside, it's true the amount of time they will receive light will be reduced (from say 18 hours to 12). However, the amount of light will be increased. The sun will supply more light in 12 hours than your lights can do in 18 hours. Blooming and fruiting, of course, will be influenced by whether the plants are short-day or long-day plants, but I'd leave that to the plants once they're outside. They know exactly what they're doing :-) My suggestion is to increase the length of time you leave your lights on. But whatever you end up doing, I wish you the best of luck with starting your seeds indoors for the first time. Sounds like you're off to a good start! Art

Judy, Years ago I had one of the inexpensive plastic enclosed light stands, but I discontinued using it after the first year because its 24-inch fluorescent lights weren't very bright and it didn't hold very many standard 11" x 22" seed trays. And it had other problems, like falling apart if you tried to move it. The plastic cover also greatly hindered air circulation which, in turn, encouraged Damping Off, white surface fungus, green algae moss, and other problems. I now use small electric fans to "exercise" my seedlings as soon as they come up. The gentle breeze from the fans also dries the surface of the growing medium to discourage Damping Off, etc. Put a thermometer in your garage to monitor its temperature, if you don't already have one there. You may not need any auxilliary heat, because the fluorescent tubes themselves provide some warmth for your seedlings. And you may want to get some seed starter heating mats to accelerate the germination and growth of your seedlings, and those electric mats or heating cables will also provide some warmth. Bandido I was under the impression that poppies needed some cold to germinate properly. Just an impression, one southern grower told me to scatter seeds outside in mid-December to assure plants in the spring. If so, you'll need to address this by possibly freezinf or chilling the seeds. Here is some references I came across on this: "February is a particularly good month to sow seeds of some wildflowers - perhaps not the month we would naturally start our seed sowing, but many seeds require a period of very cold weather before germination will take place. This is known as ÂvernalisationÂ and species requiring this cold treatment can be sown now, as February is often our coldest month. We are sometimes advised to put seeds of the wild Primulas (cowslip, primrose and oxlip) or those of snakeshead fritillary, wild hellebore or poppy into the fridge or freezer for a while before sowing. Unfortunately this often does often not reproduce the exact conditions these species need Â several spells of really cold temperatures interspersed with fluctuating higher ones. There is really only one way of exposing seeds to these exacting conditions and that is to sow now in pots or seed trays and leave them outside. Nature will do the rest for you very efficiently."

Start the seeds indoors like melon seeds [in pots]....about 3 or 4 weeks early. In the north only the bottom branches get fully mature.

You need to check with your county extension office to see if it's legal for you to grow cotton without a permit. Believe it or not, some states require a permit and access for inspectors, even for a private garden planting. The reason is to keep the boll weevil out of areas it has not infested and those areas where it has been irradicated. Maybe your area is too cold for the pest and it's ok, but it's best to check.

don't try to get the fuzz off-- just plant them as-is. They are very easy to grow.

Germination will be best if you have some sort of bottom heat and after germination put them either in full sun or under grow lights. I've grown cotton here on Long Island, and people thought I was nuts, LOL but its a pretty plant and flowers pretty will turn into a pod and thats where the seeds are. Wait for the pods to turn brown and your new seeds will be ripe. Good luck!

Yeah its edible, but it has kind of a dry aftertaste. You should have a nice size beverage nearby while you snack :o)

I have grown cotton in SE PA, but the bolls didn't burst. They just plumped and looked nearly ready when we got frost. I started the seeds indoors, but that was a cool, wet summer here. The flowers were really beautiful. I have never seen a boll weevil, I don't think they can overwinter here, especially this past winter, which was very cold in Jan.

Chocolate covered cotton - pffftttt!! I think I'll just look at mine. I'm growing them in the garden as an accent to the vegetables, but I've heard they are very pretty, so I might do containers next year.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice!! I looked up the boll weevil eradication plan and it does not extend this far north (nor to the area where the seed was grown).

glorygrown - How early did you start yours inside? Did they get very large or could I grow them for a while under my lights?

It was a few years ago, but I think I started them around the time I started the tomatoes - say early March. I didn't really know what to expect since my husband brought back seeds from a business trip to Texas where he says cotton grows on the fringe by the road like weeds. The plants are large and have lovely pastel flowers. I agree that they liked bottom heat to start(I put them on top of the shoplights till they germinate and go underneath), and I think I might have scarified them since the outsides are so incredibly hard. Why do you want to grow them? For ensured success, you may want to start them now. I'm in Chester County, and I haven't tried to grow cotton since that one experiment.

Thank you, glorygrown. I will try starting them this weekend and scarify them. I'm interested in growing cotton because I just found out about colored varieties of cotton. I thought it was only white! I'm either growing Egyptian Green or Seamist Green. I thought they would be vaguely tinted green, but the cotton still on the seeds is an amazing range of deep greens. I'm also interested in seeing what the plant/flowers look like as an ornamental.

Bella, I am supposed to have some brown cotton seeds coming from alabama, would you be interested in trading 2 or 3 seeds, green for brown?

I dont know if I would start them this early, they havent started planting yet for the year in the deep south. I started mine last year around april 15 and had a decent little crop down here in Dover

Hi All,

I've got cotton seeds, too. I'm going to direct seed them in my garden. Any suggestions on distance between plants? Should I soak the seeds or just nick them (or just plant them)? Internet info is very sparce. I'm in southern Maryland - but we're not part of the boll weevil eradication program.
