Best rhubarb seedlings?

Where have you found the best rhubarb seedlings mail-order? I'd have to order them now as I'd plant them late Winter, right? Thanks for any tips and info!

Are you asking about rhubarb from seed?

Or, are you asking about rhubarb roots -- ie, cloned varieties NOT propagated by seed?

Both are available from numerous mail-order sources.

If you want to grow your own from seed, which is VERY easy to do, you will mostly find the varieties 'Victoria' and 'Glaskins Perpetual' out there. Both are largely green with only modest amounts of reddish coloring earlier in the season, large leaved, very vigorous and productive.

There are many more varieties only available as roots.

Some of the better mail-order nurseries for fruiting plants in general include Nourse Farms in MA, Indiana Berry Company in Indiana, Raintree Nursery in Washington State.

Thank you, Dennis, that's very helpful, I will look at those sources. I need to get rhubarb roots or plants because I won't be able to propagate from seeds myself this Winter indoors as I'm about to have a baby and a bit overwhelmed. But I'm still thinking about my Spring planting! And trying to plan and order what I'll need. I am crazy about rhubarb and want to establish rhubarb in one of my vegetable beds. Thanks again.

Rebecca, the most productive rhubarb plant that I know of is on the east side of a building. My 3, younger plants have protection from an afternoon sun. The one with the most southern exposure, is the smallest plant but they are all doing well. Protection from the afternoon sun seems to make sense here. My soil is very porous and there's next to zero rain during the Summer, so humidity is also very low. I know of rhubarb planted near evergreens. They don't look good, probably because the tree roots pull so much moisture out of the soil there. Honestly, I think your full sun in Southern Ontario should work fine. In my experience, rhubarb can be a bit tricky to get started; but once established, it is a very reliable producer. I have the Macdonald and Tilden strains(Nourse) and valentine, which is touted pretty highly. Hartmans offers the best price on this variety. I'll also add Starcrimson (Starks) this year. Victoria is an old standby and is always the cheapest. It is predominantly green and can be found most anywhere. If you know someone with rhubarb, you can get starts from them as rhubarb needs divided routinely. My personal favorite (variety unknown) came from my grandmother. There is a sentimental factor for sure, but it has performed better than my other types and has succulent, bright red, sweet stalks. Amend your soil with lots of manure if possible. Brook

Does it look stressed? No it doesn’t. Providing it gets sufficient water it will be perfectly happy. If possible, move deciduous trees when they are dormant. ie after they have dropped their leaves. Cold weather will not stress a dormant apple. Fiddling with it when it is in full leaf will.

I promised I would make some comments so here goes. Your group of seedlings is impressive especially since they are new ones. In the first group I like Judy's Jewel X Bubblegum Queen # 2. I like the wonderful pink coloring with the watermark and gold edge. Your patterned one in the first group is also impressive. I'm not an expert in patterns (we grow very few) but the pattern in cooler temps in one of the best I have seen. I also appreciate that it has a pattern in warmer temps. Get Jiggy, for example, is just an eyed daylily in warmer temps in our garden. In the second group, there are almost too many to mention. I like the Gypsy Cats seedlings, the Stenciled Infusion seedlings, and the SC Frances Busby seedling. In the purple group I like the SC Night Vision X Violet Victory seedling. I like the shape of the bloom along with the blue eye and the edge. In the last group I like the Click Bait seedling. I like the red with the picotee white edge on petals and sepals. Nice work! I understand how you feel about your seedlings. We spend most of the our time looking at the seedlings and we neglect our named ones. Once you start using your own seedlings inu our crosses (which you do) you don't have as much need for the ones from other hybridizers. That's why we hope to cut our named varieties in half. Nancy

We enjoy two different varieties of rhubarb and they both have good qualities. We like them both for there individual traits. We recently ordered Valentine from Hartman's Nursery just to try something new. I'm sure it will have its own redeeming qualities. As far as where to get the roots we have ordered products from various sources and I think almost all are reputable, just remember, like gambling don't spend more than you can afford on a new source.
