What would you put in front of these shrubs?

Guess I'm thinking in terms of annuals. Had candytuft there & it just became terribly infested with weeds. Had to hire guy to clean it out with a mini-backhoe... seriously!

Summers here are hot & humid. Would you just leave it blank & keep it mulched? I saw "sunpatiens" advertised, & wondered about them, as they are supposed to do well in full & part sun, both of which are conditions that this one bed actually has...sun in the front, shade to the left. There are pine trees to the left. Also thought about begonias which seem to have a long bloom time & do really well here, even in the sun, which suprises me.

Thanks for any ideas! Btw, the crape myrtle tree in front of the house has been removed. A small coral bark Japanese Maple was planted there in the fall.
