How much would you pay to have land all year?

Hi,

This is a question to people in northern climates especially.

How much do you think 1000 sq ft of good raised beds (irrigation included)in a greenhouse environment (close to your home) would be worth? How much would you pay to have access to this if you didn't have land to garden?

I've seen people selling 1000 sq ft plots for $500 a year, do you all think it's worth it?

Are they selling the land or leasing it? Where have you seen this? Can you provide a link?

This note helped me get going and order mine. $35.50/yd and $20/del. Hemlock mulch. She said it was the same price as last year. Same as George, lasts 2 years undisturbed... even 3 on builtup areas really undisturbed. George: 27 yards? You need more plants!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL I have an area where it started out that high, but I've planted it up to where I am now down to 10 yards there (every 3 years). Also with that much quantity, it is very hard to know you area really getting as much as you are paying for. I am pretty sure I got shorted some yardage back then. There is some debate over how many yards fit in a dumptruck.

Unfortunatly, that sort of thing doesn't seem to bring much or even sell well on eBay. do search for completed auctions and there is a lot that never even gets one bid. I think it's darling! But you would need to find a tea pot collector to pay what it's worth. If you want to sell it I would look for a consignment shop. It looks like a $65 tea pot to me...but realistically you will be very lucky to get $25. Linda C

For whatever it's worth in hindsight, I agree with your method newhomebuilder. That's the way I approach "antiques" also... though I'm sure the pieces I've purchased are not "true" antiques either since they are not hundreds of years old and have no provenance that I know of. I still call them "antiques" because in my mind "good quality used furniture" is 30 years old and less... but I don't do this for a living either ;). The pieces I have are meant for living and using, not for collecting a necessarily unique and very old piece that will go for megabucks on the auction block. My most expensive piece is a $2300 (including shipping from the midwest to the east coast) china cabinet/curio and I found that to be in line with what I'd pay for something new and nowhere near comparable quality, so I'm happy with it. I don't buy furniture as an "investment" with the plan to make my money and then some back at a later date, I buy it to use it... I try to set a reasonable budget based on what things go for on ebay (which I consider a bottom price, not an average price for someone who doesn't have the time to do the REAL legwork of hitting estate sales and yard sales etc) and what a similar thing would cost me new (which I consider a top price) and if it's somewhere in there and the right piece for me, I go for it. But I'm a consumer, not a dealer and I know people in "the biz" have MUCH higher standards than I do all the way around ;). The nice thing about 50+ year old "used" furniture is that it's already done its major depreciating so if you DO need to sell it, you can likely get your money (or most of it back). A $300 particalboard table will likely get you $30 in a couple of years (if that) if you change your mind. I'm not looking for every piece in my house to be a "deal." Although that would be nice, sometimes the perfect piece just calls to me and it may not even be all that unique, rare or a true antique... but I love the little table you bought and the carved swirl detail on it would have been enough for me to want THAT table rather than look for another similar one that is a hundred dollars cheaper. My friends who own an antique shop won't buy anything (even for themselves since they get bored of stuff and rotate it out from their home to the shop regularly) that they can't sell in their shop for double what they paid, but they do a heck of a lot more legwork than I do and are never looking for the "perfect" piece for a spot in their home... their home is pretty much a rotating display of beautiful things. Anyway I see a similar table on ebay with flame mahogany (I prefer straight grain) for $485 so you can't be THAT far out of the range. And it looks great where it is.

I'd love it too! I like to eat all over in Grand Rapids, I've got a list of new places to try and I have old favorites too. There's a relatively new Mexican place downtown called maggie's Kitchen, they even have barbacoa made of beef cheeks, there's a Caribbean place with some kind of goat dish that's only got curbside service, a fish place on Kalamazoo down by the Mediterranean Market, and there are old standbys like Pietro's. I love the Blue Water Grill but that's clear over off Plainfield on East Beltline, and there are a lot of places I haven't even tried downtown near VanAndel and The B.O.B. Any preferences? Sushi? Indian? Fish? Diner? Even chain restaurants if you have a favorite, heck, we've even got a Sonic now, right across the street from Gordon Food Service on Alpine, LOL. You tell me when and we'll find a where! I'm definitely going to have to check D&W for Koeze's, though, and the one on 44th has DeRueze's Gourmet Market right next door. They now have a cut rate gourmet department where they get pallets full of stuff for really cheap, it's fun but you never know what you'll find for a buck... Annie

Im not in that situation though if I were, I would consider, the price, is it affordable, how much could you save by growing your own, the location, and the soil/irrigation. Though if I were in your situation, I would really like to have something like that.

Raised beds: I'm thinking good soil

Irrigation included: Maybe a hose with free water or is it something more

Greenhouse environment: Enclosed? Heated? Warm enough to grow year round? Secure from critters and maybe even unwelcome people?

20 ft x 50 ft with good, usable year round, secure space is looking pretty good to me as we are getting hit with another winter storm right now. I'd have to know details about the "greenhouse environment" but I could see people liking this.

I know several people who rent 10x25 plots in a community garden that is usable from May to October for $35. May and October are not frost free and not warm enough for rapid growth of frost tolerant veggies. You're talking 4 times the space and maybe year round growing conditions. And maybe no groundhog, deer, and rabbit issues. Also, no big personal outlay of time or money to get it set up and the possiblity of using it for only a year or two due to relocation or health concerns. No hassles with local zoning over building a greenhouse, either. I could see avid gardeners without tight money constraints possibly finding this a good option.

If it was really fertile and was protected from animal predators and human predators and wasn't far out of the way and a person was going to intensely garden it, it might be worth $300.

My garden, especially my back yard where my veggies and most of my herbs grow, becomes my living room during the summer months. It is not just where I grow food. It is where I take my morning coffee, where I read in the shade, where I entertain, where I discuss the deep issues and the really silly stuff with the people I love.

So, for me, a garden that is not part of my home would not hold any value for me. Nope, not worth it.

If you can garden 365 days/yr, and are an avid gardener, I'd consider it. Especially if you have no other place to grow things. $500 works out to less than $1.50 per day.

In my part of the world where it's dry in summer, that would come close to my water bill alone.

There's plenty of good and affodable real estate down here in South Louisiana where we have the climate to garden year round

Do you pay for fuel in addition to the $500? I'm quite certain 1000 s.f. of greenhouse space can't be heated for $500 per year in a Northern climate. Fuel cost for a greenhouse can be expensive.

Also, to make a greenhouse usable during the summer, it will require fans for ventilation and possibly evaporative cooling. That will add expense for electricity. If shade cloth is necessary, do you provide it or does the owner already have it?
