Trying different types of vegs? Brassicas? Onions?

I lost a tree this year (unfortunately) but will be able to expand my veggie garden. I usually do peas, lettuce and chard in the Spring and then turn to tomatoes and peppers. I don't use pesticides.

I tried broccoli in the past and it did not do well - it attracted pests and didn't grow. Is it always buggy without pesticides? Would cabbage be the same? I am interested in Savoy and napa. Would row covers be necessary?

I also wonder how leeks, shallots and garlic do in my area?

Thanks for any info!

Maureen
