has postage & packaging changed???

Hi,

It seems to me that as recent as last spring, I had a choice if I wanted to send my package 'priority mail'. I just checked the usps site to mail out my 1 lb. 5 oz pkg and it seems I have NO choice but to send it 'priority mail' or 'flat rate priority mail'. There is only a few dollars difference. Didn't there used to be another less expensive option such as 'first class' mail for packages...or am I just going nuts in my old age???

Hi kwyet1/Linda,

You are speaking of Parcel Post rates. They are a very very little bit cheaper, unless you can fit it into a small flat rate box at $4.95.

Go to the link below, and fill in the zip codes, and choose PACKAGE and fill in the weight and CONTINUE, and the next page will give you the calculation for Parcel Post, which they CLAIM is 3 days. (Baloney!)

I have had Parcel Post packages take up to 2 weeks. I was told that they are 'first IN, first OUT, and are sent on their way pending available room to be 'moved' on. Until there is 'room' they are stored, is my take on things.

Yes Sue, it is Parcel Post....even when I looked that up there is only $2-$3 difference between that and the 'medium flat rate' box. I guess that I am just amazed that it costs between $8 & $10.50 (or so) to mail out an item that weighs just 1-2 lbs.

All my bubblies coming and going arrive in a fair amount of time ie 1, 2, or 3 days, and the same with packages. including a priority mail package that took almost two weeks to go from Ohio to New Hampshire. That almost sounds like it might have accidentally got in with the Parcel Post stuff. You never know how long that stuff will take, as it is determined by volume I'm told. It is first in, first out when there is availability on trucks after the mail and packages going at higher rates. Was it in an actual Priority Mail Box? If not, it could have been mistaken for Parcel Post. A BE I mailed from IN to PA last Wed arrived on Fri. Not bad since Thurs was the holiday. Sue

I do postage for extra Iris a lot. this is what I require from the sender! I only use the Priority boxes, they get there faster and I know the exact postage for each size of box. 1- Postage--money order or cash no checks. 2- A return address label 3- A note reminding me what the postage is for. sometimes I have more than one offer going on and with the note I do not have to hunt up the posts to figure out what one is what. After I get the postage "THEN" I send off the box. I then let the sender know that I got there postage and there box is on its way to them. I cut them back roots and tops, clean out the dirt and let them dry for a few days. Hope this helps. Gayla

Um, well, I have 8 cows. And a horse, and 21 chickens, 2 dogs and 2 cats. I do like my animals. (grin) Plus 200 asparagus crowns that needed the ferns trimmed today because it's going to be raining tomorrow and then highs in the 20s after that. People have been coming to cut Christmas trees, we have the "cut your own" thing but someone always needs change or a saw or help. We'll set hay tomorrow because I'm going out of town for three days (but driving home every evening) for some "Ag" classes, but I'll have to come home early on Wednesday evening because I'm secretary of our Township Planning Commission and we have a 7 pm meeting. The farrier is coming Tuesday and Elery is on his own for the first time for that. I need to bake cake for 100 by Sunday for Madi's birthday and an anniversary cake for Saturday for an elderly friend and his wife, 66 years of marriage. Then next week we start on Christmas baking because Elery's family Christmas is the 16th and we're taking ham, beef, lasagna, apple stack cake using his Mother's recipe, plus cookies and fudge. I need to bake a birthday treat for Elery's grandson Jack, he's 10, and we'll give him his birthday present at the Christmas party, but he's 10, he needs a cake or something so his birthday doesn't get lost in the Christmas shuffle. Oh, and I need to make fudge to send to California for Elery's oldest son and their family. Fortunately for me, I can sliced apples and freeze fruit already sliced or peeled or whatever, so I really can make a 10 minute pie if I have to. It's not as much fun and it's sure not fancy, but it's pie and it'll do in a pinch. Today, though, I made date filled cookies for no reason other than Elery likes them. They aren't the prettiest cookie on a plate, but they sure taste good! Annie

Davidtay and Andrew, Still trying to get my head around these lighting controls. I think the Lutron RadioRA2 is what we prefer. Please help me understand what we would need to buy for each main room (let us assume there is at least a 3 way switch in each room and some have 4 way). In other words, our open concept house will have at least 2 spots in each room where lights can be turned on and off. Presently, the plan was to have multiple switches in each location (which I hate do to confusion of which switch operates which circuit). So, with the above preamble, what do I need to buy for say one room with a 3 way switch (two locations at different entries where lights can be controlled)? In that room let us assume there are 3 circuits needing to be controlled (say dining room chandy, mood lights and say pot lights all on a different circuit and all we desire the control to dim as needed). If you could help me understand what I need to buy for one room with the Lutron RadioRA2 scene control, I could then figure out what I would need to buy to have similar scene controls in all the main rooms (kitchen, great room, dining room and media room). Any general guidance on pricing of necessary products for the above scenarios? If these scene controls are controlled wirelessly, what if any in wall wiring do we need to ensure is in place before closing the walls? Do we need to hire a contractor to commission these scene controls or can they be DIY installed (DH is handy/knowledgeable enough to do some of our wiring). Do the scene controls in a room eliminate the need to have the multiple groups of light switches (or are they in addition to the multiple switches)? In other words, if we have 3 circuits needing to be controlled in a room, do we have one Lutron scene control beside a 3 gang regular light switch (room for 4 light boxes)? Sorry for all the questions -- even if you can answer some of them I would be very grateful. Also, if you can point me in the direction of where we can learn the nitty gritty of what needs to be bought and how to install these scene controls that would be very helpful. We do not have the budget to hire out the whole install and design so have to find a way to learn what needs to be done and how to do it. You can go HERE to see what mail zone you are from the recipient, or vice versa.

You can then go HERE to see the costs of different weights to different mail zones.

I think I can send a 2 LB box to everyone pretty well east of the Mississippi for $5.95 or less as they are all in mail zone 4 or less from me.
That same 2 LB box though, sent to someone in mail zone 8 from me (like CA or WA) would be $9.55.

That is why I won't usually respond to trade posts made by those who don't have their location shown either on their member page or in their post. Whatever I might be considering trading might be worth an outlay of $5.95, but not worth me spending $9.55.

I often see folks wanting to trade flat rate boxes. I 'know' that oftentimes they could mail a box of the exact same dimensions and weight, and would pay considerable less if they paid by the pound. I guess it is just too complicated for some to consider though....besides not having a scale or any idea what a box weighs. I receive in a lot of plant trades that could have been mailed more economically had the Flat Rate box not been used.

In case you or anyone is interested, below is a link to some nice (reasonably priced) postal scales at Ebay. $20 or less, including postage is a great buy. It helps me so much when sending plants or even on seeds

Hmmm....Sue, I never thought of checking someone's location before agreeing to a trade! How smart of you! I am going to try to remember that little hint (I'm definatly a member of the crs club)!

I also removed some things from my plants available list due them being hard to dig, and never knowing how many pounds they might weigh one I got a hunk of the plant. They were hardy hibiscus. I dug some last year for a local GW in person swap, and they were all 2 GA sized plants. I also removed yucca as I think the roots run clear down to China.
