Really Good Nasturtiums

I have tried them in pots and in the ground and they are always nice enough. But I recall seeing nasturtiums in Michigan once that blew me away! They were in the ground in town and were huge and full and robust and tall. Both the flowers and the leaves were dazzling. I've never forgotten them. Is there a secret?

Some varieties do get huge while others remain compact. I like the sprawly, climby, rambling, mounding types. I'm struggling to remember the name of what I tend to grow, and I swear it's Empress of India, although everything I read says this is a small one. Alaska can get big too. Nasturtiums reglarly, year after year, take over some part of my garden, usually volunteering. They do well with plenty of water in the early weeks, keep them moist as much as you can, and the plant will get big with those great huge leaves... then when they reach that point I ignore them for the rest of the summer and they flower their heads off.

I just now did a search for "nasturtium" on this forum - looking to see if I could find the thread from this last Spring/Summer that had the most wonderful picture of nasturtiums I've ever seen (a gardener in England) - thinking that you could email that gardener to ask about the secret of his/her success. But I have run out of time - I only really had time to read one thread, but I think it might be of real help to you. It was titled "Nasturtium Growing Tips? What's the Secret?". It had a lot of useful information. Run a search for "nasturtium" and it will come up as the third or fourth thread listed. Good luck!
P.S. I had them this last year, and I'll have them again this coming Spring. They weren't fabulous (it gets too hot here for fabulous), but they were delightful all the same, especially in the Spring and the late Summer, when the temps cooled off a bit.

Yes, indeed. Especially if you get the trailing ones. 'Moonlight', 'Jewels of Africa', 'Spitfire', and 'Tall Trailing Mix' are some good ones for hanging planters.

I wish we could get those big packages that used to be available. Actually I am thinking more of getting ready to plant dahlias than I am of seeds. In a few weeks I will start them in the house.

No, that is common. The gasket is a food grade silicone rubber, and applied as a liquid during manufacture. It requires a catalyst added to a liquid silicone rubber to solidify the material. Sometimes during manufacture the silicone seal has not totally cured to a solid product. It attaches itself to the glass rim only because silicone prouducts are designed to stick to glass and hard glazes quite well. Think bathroom tub caulk. In any case, its OK if it does stick to the glass, but you may also want to slightly reduce the torque of the tightening of the rings so the seal doesn't cut all the way through the thin layer of silicone rubber. If the jars have been sitting a few months that too can increase the holding power of silicone to glass. The use of a 'church key' which usually also has a rounded end, as opposed to the pointed end, can easily remove lids. Its always nice to know that lids are very secure on jars once processed. I have also seen this issue with old lids, like more than 10 years old. Firtneately, todays canning lids (since about the mid 1970's) have been mae of silicone, which never dries out or cracks like plain rubber used to.

I like the sound of the Black Bean Soup from Suzieque. This recipe’s been a favorite for a long time since finding it in Bon Appetit. My notes have “Feb. 2005.” Maybe the same as girlnamedgalez8a mentioned. I’ve included it for many of our Halloween soup parties. Black Bean and Kielbasa Chili Serves 6 Note: Better if made 1-2 days ahead. I prefer this without the green pepper. I use 1 red and 1 yellow or orange bell pepper. I also like to add a little corn...frozen is fine. 2 T. olive oil 1 1/2 pounds beef or turkey kielbasa, quartered lengthwise, then chopped into 1/2-inch pieces 2 cups chopped onions 1 red bell pepper, chopped 1 green bell pepper, chopped 4 large cloves garlic, chopped 4 15-oz. cans black beans, drained 1 14-oz. can low-salt chicken broth 1 14-oz. can diced tomatoes in juice 3 T. chili powder 2 T. sugar 2 T. red wine vinegar 3 small bay leaves 1 T. dried oregano (I used a little less) 2 tsp. cumin Sour cream Chopped green onion Heat olive oil in heavy pot over medium-high heat. Sauté kielbasa until beginning to brown, about 12 minutes. Transfer kielbasa to bowl with slotted spoon. If necessary, add enough oil to pot to measure about 2 T. (or discard all but 2 T. of drippings). Add onions, peppers and garlic. Sauté until beginning to brown, about 10 minutes. Add beans, broth, tomatoes with juice, chili powder, sugar, vinegar, bay leaves, oregano and cumin. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium, cover, and simmer 30 minutes. Return kielbasa to pot. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, uncovered, until chili is thick, stirring occasionally, about 30-40 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Serve with toppings of sour cream and chopped green onion (shredded cheese and olives are good, too).

I grow lots of different kinds also and they can grow very differently. Some are big and bushy, some trail all over the place and others stay relatively small. My experience is that they grow bigger and better in the ground and for me really hit their stride only later in the summer and then explode in the fall.

They love the cool, foggy weather here, and I've got the tall, trailing single type naturalized all around. I also have Alaska, but the old-fashioned trailing kind is definitely more vigorous and does have a big wow factor.

I had a seedling come up this summer that I think must be a result of cross pollination between Alaska and the regular. It has bright chartreuse colored leaves, like golden feverfew or Heuchera 'Key Lime Pie'. It hasn't gotten very big or bloomed yet, but I am hoping it lives and proves something special. If it gets bigger, I'm going to root a piece and give it to Annie at Annies Annuals so she can pass it along.
