You could plant in containers, but also keeping them in the fridge will slow them down somewhat. When they are ready to bloom however, they will attempt it; especially if they are early ones. I would get them in some potting mix a.s.a.p., and then you can ready them for next year in plenty of time.

So, if it's not going to stop them from growing (fridge) and by putting them in potting soil, they will grow anyways...then I should just put them in the ground? I can plant them in closer proximity if space becomes an issue. And just dig them up and move them next year? Since we dont really get a true freeze or snow etc. will that be ok to do too?

I doubt that you get cold enough winters for tulips to be considered anything but annuals. Without enough chilling tulips may survive but grow only about six inches high and if some do bloom the bloom is right on the ground. Al

I guess it must get cold enough....I had planted tulips in one little bed that I had (at that time, 3 years ago) and they came up of course year one (this photo is actually of them the second year, I noticed they didn't stay together as well or as long year two)

I'm hoping for them to come back up this year too!!! have not seen any growth yet, but I know that the bulbs are there and as far as I can tell they are intact...I accidentally bumped into some when planting my pansy's....

I also had tulips come up 2 years in a row (and then I moved) when I was in San Diego...but there I think that a season of excess rain may have did them in, because after I left, my friend who was renting my house from me, said she never saw them come up.....I know it doesn't freeze there...

not sure how that works....from a technical point of view...but to me proof is in the blooming and reblooming....

PS: all of the bulbs mentioned where left in the ground from year to year, they were not dug up and chilled etc.

Don't you people have snow in Georgia? I always was under the impression that you had some cold winters.

They do like a chill, but here in northern CA where we have had freezing temps the last two weeks (one town had four inches of snow!) we usually do not get enough. They act like annuals here in CA for the most part. There are some areas where they do better than others; they are not typically good bulbs for us. It is a god idea to feed them three times during the growing season, too. Once at the beginning, once during growth when they start to shoot up; and once right after bloom to build them up for the next season. Some people miss this, and they don't get any new growth.

We do not have snow, (although my DH says he's seen it before, he was born and rasied here) We are expecting a few days this week in the low 20's that's about the coldest I ever remember it getting....

Thanks for the tip on feeding....I guess I tend to be a lazy gardener...I do the work up front to plant and amend the soil and then just leave em to do what they will do...

I cant wait to see my spring show...I just FINALLY finished planting EVERY bulb I bought and it was no small task....I know I planted over 300 tulips and about 50 hyacinth and countless paperwhites...dozens of freezia and a few others I had not planted before....then I finished all my beds off with a few dozen six packs of pansy's....

I just know that it will be spectacular come spring...I'll sure be ready to post some pics if it turns out anything at all like I hope it will....

I wish you luck on the Spring Show! But even up here in MD I can't get tulips to bloom more than 2 years. I used to get years out of them, but it doesn't seem to stay cold long enough any more. The 3rd year, I just get foliage and then "so long".

I know that some dedicated tulip-lovers in warm areas dig them up and chill them in an extra refrigerator over the Winter, but that a lot of work! I've tried that and I usually end up damaging half of them anyway.
I've given up on them.

I've had a few Rembrandt tulips linger on for many years, but I get fewer and fewer each year. I'm putting in some more, because I miss them, but the daffodils are definitely longer-lived, and also rodent-proof.
