Hope you can help me with a id

First, let me introduce myself, I am a gardener, have a real passion for plants of all types, shade gardening, aka, hostas, being my first passion, but I do have the room to do all types of gardening and I do do so, you name the type of gardening and I do it to some scale or another.

I am hoping I am posting this on the right forum, if not, please bear with me.

Because of a injury, I was unable to garden this year, but I found many of my unplanted containers reseeded themselves. All of reseeds I know as personal friends, I do a lot of container gardening when able to garden. Or at least I thought I knew them all until this little beauty showed up, it has me stumped. I know I never planted it, where it came from is a mystery. More the mystery, it came up in a container so far under the eaves it never got a drop of rain, the only water my plants got this year, nothing should be growing in the conditions this pot was in. Maybe it would have been even prettier if it actually got some water and was growing in new dirt.

I'm kind of thinking I would like to harvest the seeds, should it have time to produce any, but sure would like an id. Maybe let know if it's a noxious weed? (like I don't have enough of those growing at my place, I swear I have perella (sp) ready to take over the county I live in, I think I even saw it marching down the road towards town one day, lol)

Hey,Choc! I have a couple large perennials books,but this one stumps me! I think I have seen it before myself somewhere. This one,in one of my perennial books looks like Rodgersia,as far as leaf structure goes,but the pic doesn't show any flowers. As well as it grew for you,I'd try to save it as it is a nice looking plant! Phil

Back again ~ Yes, it was a trick with the lighting, Niel...it has no white edge...dern! I just checked the tag that came with it. I never believe what they say, most times anyway...but maybe I should've paid attention. I saw the name Stomatium & started research from there. The tag says it's a hybrid between Stomatiuum and Faucaria & calling it Miniature Tiger Jaws. Sooo...do any of you know of hybrids between these two? And...when I just looked, the bloom is halfway open & it's midday here...so is it confused as to which one it is? LOL~ Ha! I can detect no fragrance from it either. Onto another...here's a pic of that Haworthia after it got a drink & repotting. Also a pic of it next to Haworthia cuspidata on the right. Do you see what I mean about these being tiny rosettes? So, any clue as to what it is? Niel, here's that Aloe of mine, blooming again. This time the buds were not yellow & I've put it in full sun, making the leaves turn a brown shade. I look forward to your bloom pic, Niel! AND...here's a pic from bk in Sep of that 1st Aoe which I had tentatively ID'd as Aloe 'Wamsley's Blue' (I forgot). Thanks you all. I wasn't sure about the first plant shown, the leaves feel so much more succulant than my other carnosas. But it has really taken off this summer. And yes, they have very high humidity. They are outside from about April through October, and for the past month we've been very hot and humid. 90F plus with about 70% humidity. I bring them into a heated porch when the night temps starting consistently dropping below 55F. I'm in Zone 8, in the FL panhandle, but I live less than a mile from the Gulf, so it's always pretty humid and breezy here. The only plant I treat differently is Hoya serpens, which I leave outside until the nights go below 35F. Funny thing, it is growing a lot in this heat as well. Here's a picture of the serpens from this past spring, and the plant has probably doubled in size since then.

Blue Pearl has been around a long time, and will be around a lot longer... When I first started in the "slab side" of this Trade, some 23 years ago, Blue Pearl was one of the first kinds of Granite that I had ever worked with - still love it today, except there's a whole lot more choices now - then there was 23 years ago... I think the "regional" thingy has some validity, but in the end, it's strictly a personal choice issue - I saw alot more of Blue Pearl in the Mid-West than out here in Phoenix... Yes katusha, Ponder hit the nail right on the head. I did finally find out what it was using the old fashion method called books. And 50 lashes with a wet noodle to me for not resorting to the method that did me so well long before the computer age, I'm becoming too much of a techno junkie for my own good. I have a vast library of books and that should have been my first reference. It took me all of 10 seconds looking through my Taylors book of annuals to find it. And worse thing is, I'm very vocal on the joys of the written word and here I don't even use my vast library, hanging my head in shame.

I was just coming on to post that I found it when I found both your post.

Where this plant came from, I have no idea, I know I never planted it, guess a friendly bird figured I needed it. Considering it is growing as well as it can in conditions it should not like, I'm considering it a gift, I just hope I am able to harvest some seeds, sure would like to see it in good growing conditions. If it does not seed in time for me, we are having an early fall, I think I'll look for seeds come spring, I've kind grown to like this thing. Maybe I'll dig the poor thing up and pot it to be brought inside, I have a whole reverted 3 car garage that is a mixture of bar and plant overwintering room, if nothing else, to give it time to reseed.

And yes, I did read that it is toxic, but fortunally or unfortunally, for the first time in years, I am able to grow toxic plants. I was unable to have children, but I have had all the neighbor kids grow up in my gardens, I was always the crazy neighbor lady with all the fun stuff, use to come home to a mass of kids playing on all the stuff I put up for me to play with, would even find them in the house, never knew where I was going to find a kid, lol. But right now, 'my' kids are all old enough to know not eat anything that I do not give the ok for so I think I can grow it for the time being.

Choc, books are good too, I have a lot of them myself, but sometimes paging thru them doesn't help. I was going thru some of mine last nite looking for your plant, but didn't find it. Then I saw Ponder's answer and looked that up. I am a reader. I have a library in my bathroom! LOL! I can't just sit and eat unless we go out to eat...I have to read something, anything, at home. That's why I love the web. I am reading and searching for many different things. I could never have all the books at home to look all these things up. So don't hang your head, you're reading the 'written' word on the web too.
As for your plant, I hope you get seeds from it. You're lucky to have the garage to hold things over. My hubby 'owns' ours. That's his workshop. We had snow the other nite and I lost some annuals, but I am surprised on how many are still doing ok, even after a few nites of temps in the upper 30's.
Good luck to you and I hope you'll be able to have several of these plants next summer.

I have seeds of your subject plant, Nicandra, to share. The unusual papery lantern-shaped pods looked good in a clear vase for Halloween. Now I need to get rid of them. Anyone want some? This plant is an annual that comes back from seed on its own like crazy each year in full sun to part sun. It is one of the easiest from seed ever. I still cannot figure out what to plant it with, and plan to make a post asking exactly that in the Companion Plants forum, if you'd care to take as look as replies arrive. Merry Christmas everyone!
