Getting Amaryllis flower through out the year

I have been reading all old postings of Amaryllis so thought of sharing my experiance with you.

We can get Amaryllis flowers all seasons because propagation and growing techniques have impoved, there are chemical formulations that can double and even triple the life of Amaryllis flower through scientific growing techniques.

I believe Amryllis bulbs can manipulated to flower when we needs them to through temperature treatment.Bulbs can be dormant through the extreme hot summer months, awaking through the cooler temperatures and can be dormant through extreme cold winter months, awaking through the cooler temperature.

The temperature is, for example, first raised to 24 C to imitate summers and us then dropped to 5C. The bulb remain in storage until they are planted. People spaces the planting of the manipulated bulbs. Thus able to get flowers each day over a period of many months.

When bulbs are planted , the soil temperature although still relatively low, is warmer than 5C so the bulb behave as if spring has arrived and accelerate it's growing pattern.

These temperature manipulated bulbs offer top quality blooms because they grow in weather conditions more similar to those of their natural habitats. They have bigger blooms and because they flower earlier they last longer.

In summer time it can also be enticed into flowering at times convienient to us. This is not done by forcing however quiet the opposite. The bulbs are also kept in cold rooms which fools them into thinking that it is still winter and therefore time to remain dormant. Once again the bulbs are brought out in weekly batches giving the non stop flowers.

I tried this almost 4 times before having my own Amaryllis bulbs in my new house. I have done this with my friend who is a Doctor in Karachi, Pakistan. And in my point of view it worked very well. Amaryllis is one of the easiest Bulb to grow, you can mold it's life style according to your needs :)
The only problem I face, which bugs me is potting soil/ medium I'm not fully satisfied with my potting soils. I use same potting soil for all kind of bulbs but few kinds never bloom that nicely that they should be. So I'm still working on potting soil. About temperature I can maintain temperature very easily but i think now I have a small seperate fridge for them :) otherwise my family gonna eat my Amaryllis bulb this season other than apples :)
I have also posted one topic "Amaryllis Growing Commerically" and i think it's worth reading. One of my uncle trying to make a Green house for growing Amaryllis Commerially, in this regard he is planning to purchase 3000 bulbs through me.
Uncle this season I'm importing 44 Bulbs of Amaryllis of 10 new Varieties which I didn't have. I have ordered already.
All in all I'm importing 14 Bulbs of Girraffe, 14 Bulbs of Celica (one of my favourite). 10 Bulbs Papillio Butterfly, San Remo, Charisma, Dancing Queen, Apple Blossom, Benifica, Red Peacock, Lady Jane. The size of these bulbs would be 34+ Cm , except Papillio Butterfly which would be 24Cm+
I'm looking for more varieties of double flowering including ; SNOW WHITE, ALFRESCO, AMALFI, BALLERINA, BELLISIMO, BLUSHING BRIDE, CANDY FLOSS, CARNIVAL, CUPIDO, FIRST LOVE, FLUFFY RUFFLES, JUNGLE BELLS, MILADY, MY FAVOURITE, ROZETTA, Razzmatazz, THAI THAI and ZOMBIE.
I will purchase all these varities in time. Let's see when time permits :)
Rest everything is fine. I will let you know when I will get new bulbs of this season. I'm waiting for them anxiously. Once again the only thing which bugs me is POTTING SOIL/MEDIUM for Amaryllis!

It is certainly possible here in MA with not too much effort. All of mine older ones are sending up buds right now. Give them plenty of sun after flowering and then put them outside in the summer. As Hans Werner suggests feed regularly. The bulbs need to be nourished by the sun and fertilizer to replenish over the summer. I put mine in the shed in September to force dormancy and keep them in a cool dark room until I see them start to grow. Normally this is in early January. I repot some of mine without too much damage. I wonder if buying them at a chain store (a not so dependable source) is also part of the problem. I dont think you need to pay the ridiculous prices at Jackson and Perkins or White Flower Farms but much better bulbs can be had at a local nursery for about $12. Size matters here.

Growing inside, I had the best luck with a southern exposure... but an east window will do. As luck would have it, I don't have a nice southern window here... it's shaded by huge Sycamore trees. My large Minerva seems to love the east facing window, however, and blooms very nicely there. Not to upstage Rebecca, but... Instead of keeping the soil moist, I would suggest allowing it to dry out fairly well in between waterings. It's that constant moisture around the root ball that causes the eventual rotting of the roots and bulb. Roots that are constantly wet will die, and those dead roots can rot. Rot can spread quite quickly from the roots to the actual bulb. And because there is no garden-like balance of good and bad bacteria, fungi, and microscopic organisms, the balance can quickly lean toward the bad, and rotten bulbs are the result. Container gardening is worlds away from growing in a garden... huge differences! Let's not forget that the bulb, itself, is a reservoir for moisture, so it will not begin to wilt and die if the soil is not kept consistently moist. Plants take in water in vapor form, and soil that feels almost dry to our sense of touch may still actually have a good amount of moisture in it, in vapor form. In my experience, it's better to treat Hippeastrum bulbs closer to how you would treat a succulent... allowing the medium to dry out fairly well before thoroughly watering again. Of course, if you're using a very fast and free-draining, gritty type of aerated medium, watering more frequently would not be detrimental. I'd go with a different fertilizer regimen, myself. There's no need for a fertilizer with larger amounts of P than N. If my reading is correct, I believe it is not necessary. What is necessary, though, is making sure your plants have a decent supply of micro-nutrients, and making sure the fertilizers you choose are instantly accessible to the roots for uptake. There is a wealth of educational information over at the Container Gardening Forum... they constantly discuss mediums, fertilizer programs, and most important, the WHY and HOW of all that happens within the confines of a pot. Last year, my bulbs were in lawless conditions. I bought a children pool and put them in it in their pots. It was easier to water them this way. I just poured the water in and they all got some. But then some rains came and completely drenched the bulbs. They were neck up to the water and they stayed that way for a long time by the time I noticed it and let the water away. So I ended up with most of the bulbs shrunk to tiny bulblets that I didn't think would even survive. Then I had to move to the new house, so I unpotted them, cut the leaves and put them in the new wine cooler I bought for this purpose to make sure that the bulbs do not freeze down. A month later I noticed that the wine cooler froze down and even killed about 10 bulbs. I returned it to the store and just bought a huge standing fridge that had the freezer part separately. I kept my bulbs in that fridge. Then I planted them up from Summer, hoping that they would still come back to me. And to my amazement: More than 50 percent FLOWERED! They shrunk, they were sitting in water, they froze down, they were in dormancy for a half a year or LONGER, and they BLOOMED! I am still floored by some of them. Now, they are out in the flower bed, fattening up. I hope they enjoy the situation. So you see, once they want to bloom, they just bloom, even if they kill themselves.

I am in Boston, they produce no flowers for pollination to become an issue at all. Might be a sun issue? That was kind of my guess as well, they are in an area with some sun but not massive amounts of sun as there are some trees around. Anyway, they are gone, took four hours of work, I was sad to see them go but once I saw how much effort it took to remove them I could see how invasive they had become, I guess just was not gonna work for me, I think I gave it the royal try for about 8 years! thanks everyone for their help

Give coco fiber substrate (coco peat) a chance.
This will bring your reflection on substrate compositions and sophisticated formulas to a fortunate END!

This substrate is compressed into blocks and you can recondition it with water- without any additives, prior to usage.
The rich root formation from the bulbs into this substrate and the excellent growth is simply convincing.
And try watering from the bottom. Watering from this direction is still modern technique in professional mass production of potted plants - and it imitates the natural supply from the ground water, and it diminuishes the danger of tarsonemid mite dissemination and thus helps to keep the bulb healthy. And add diluted fertilizer with every watering - coco peat does not contain noteworty quantities of nutrients - so you have full control on that!

Coco is best if you can water and feed like HANS-WERNER.But if your gardener is going to water them as they do.You will kill them as coco tends to hold too much water, combined with heat it is a road to root rot.
I am trying various mixes with coco and coarse river sand with good results.

Thanks for sharing your good ideas and thoughts. I will try my best to follow them. I haven't allowed my Gardener to touch my Amaryllis pots because he waters them too much and I can't afford to lose a single bulb :)
And Hans-Werner, I give liquid fertilizer of schultz-instant (20-30-20) and phostrogen (14-10-27) to my Amaryllis everytime I water them. My each bulb is in 14 inches clay pot and I'm using right now normal lake soil + Leaf mould + Plant Fert. I'm also planning to try Peat moss.
