Sue, Thank you for helping me out! I have a few daffodils. They have been neglected this year. So I am not sure exactly what I will have for trade. This is there second full year with me. I didn't get to pay much attention to who bloomed well this year though. Plus I never have felt comfortable about digging up and storing. I tend to get nervous and worry that I will kill them. Chilling is usually measured in hours and the amount needed can be different for different types of bulbs and even some different types of tulips - but generally, if you get things in the ground over Thanksgiving weekend you'll get the amount of chillings hours you need for good spring bloom. This is why when the entire rest of the world is sleeping off a turkey dinner in front of a football game on tv, I am outside digging in the dirt.

Kami - You say that if you "remove the scape on some then all thats left is leafy stems," which leads me to suppose that at least some of what you bought may be true lilies and not daylilies. True lilies have lots of leaves that go from bottom to top all around the stem until you get to the flower buds at the top. You also describe them as being already fully bloomed when you bought them, which sounds more like a true lily - each flower will last several days to a week, and there are often many flowers open at one time. There is a true lily called 'Dreamcatcher.' If this is what you have, it will bloom once each year, you should deadhead to prevent seed formation - remove the structure you left, it is the pistil/ovary - and then you just feed the plant to strengthen the bulb for the next year. You can get lots of expert advice on the Lilies forum. Daylilies have a big tuft of long, arching leaves at the ground. From this will emerge tall, leafless, branching stems that then have the flower buds at the top. Each flower lasts one day - it opens in the morning and closes at night - before it withers away. You will often have several flowers open on a given scape at the same time, but usually not the pig POW! yet get with true lilies. You will get a succession of flowers over up to a month or more as more buds mature and open at the top of the scape. Most varieties will be flowering for a month or so before they are done for the year. Some daylilies are rebloomers which, as long as you don't let them set too many seeds, will take a little rest and then bloom some more in the same year. - Steve

I'm in zone 4 as well. There should be no problem growing asiatics including LA's in zone 4.Mine always stay in the ground. If you feel you must dig/move them, wait until the foliage has turned brown. As long as the leaves are green they are producing energy to feed the bulb for next years blooms. As to the lily that came back weak, did the deer eat the leaves off as well? If so they may not have had enough stored energy to bloom this year. Or hungry critters may have eaten the mother bulb leaving you with just babies.I grow several of my lilies in raised beds, Should be fine. Also if they've only been in the ground for a year they shouldn't need dividing yet.
