Great looking vegetables. I like your watermelon, corn, etc. I tried Watermelon. My vine was very small because of the way I started it inside. It got a flower on it in the end, but that was in like September when it should have been setting fruit in early to mid July.

The english peas looked very thrifty, almost like new england vigor, by which I will guess you are in north GA. Between the time the ground gets warm enough to germinate and hot weather in south GA, english peas don't do so well. With our long cool spring here in maritime MA peas are one of our best crops.

Stuffradio - Thanks, I didn't even try to grow watermelon this year. Those just popped up from seeds that I grew the year before and I just let the vines run. I think I got 2 good sized melons and about 4 smaller ones. They need a long and hot summer to grow well. I guess I take that for granted here in Georgia. Good luck to you too!

pnbrown - Thanks, those were melting sugar snow peas. I am actually in middle Georgia, and I planted those peas too late last year. I planted them around Feb. 15 and by May we were hitting 95 to 100 degrees, it was crazy hot. I actually put some Oregon Sugar Pod II's in the ground today. I am hoping by starting a little bit earlier that I will have better luck. I had a pretty good harvest last year, but I hope this year to get the same harvest from less seed planted.

I think last spring was very extreme for heat in the south - I was in florida trying to get sweet potato slips to take in mid-april it was brutal. They did take nicely after a tough start.

I would think late jan/early feb would be right for peas in middle GA most years. When it comes to peas I don't like to have all those eggs in one basket so I do a lot of staggered plantings.

Very nice! Makes me nostalgic for summer, especially with it snowing outside. And hungry for all that summer bounty. Well tended garden.

pnbrown or georgiahomegarden do you have any advice if it is cool weather outside for peas? Last year, I planted Cascadia Snap peas in March, and they didn't sprout until the middle to end of April. They also didn't start flowering until late June or early July. So I want to know what I can do to get them up early, and flower early.

I probably got 2-5 lbs of peas this year. I grew between 2-300 peas in a big bunch. Here is an example of how I grew them: {{gwi:12950}}

Stuff, peas benefit a lot from some support, even the bush habit types. If they took so long to germinate then the soil was cold, or it was a bad lot of seed (very old?). If the seed was fresh then you planted to early, how much is the question.

Peas also benefit a lot from rhizobia inoculant if they are being grown in an area that has not had any. Also they need fairly good starting fertility in the soil, they leave as much N as they found if they are well inoculated, but contrary to belief they don't significantly add N unless there is no crop being taken out.

pnbrown They were new seed. When I got into the summer it took at the most a week for them to Germinate. I'm supposed to be able to direct seed in mid to late February, but last year was abnormally cool. I suppose I could start inside and transplant them. It only takes me one or two days for them to germinate inside.

stuffradio - I just planted my peas but I am in Georgia. I guess it depends on where you are at. Everything I read says plant peas as soon as the ground can be worked. I take that to mean plant them as soon as the ground isn't frozen. The will also do much better if you let them climb on a trellis.
I have read about the pea inoculate, but have never used it personally.

The inoculant is effective and is a one-time investment, so pretty well worth the expense.
