Requesting a favor re: Sand Hills Preservation order

It's looking like my December 2009 sweet potato order didn't get me in line to receive Sand Hills's 2010 printed catalog. No big deal about not having the printed version, but it appears only the tomato selection (possibly the Kohlrabi section too) of the on-line seed catalog has been updated so far. I know it's a huge job, and I'm not complaining. I'm just afraid that if I wait too long to order, the varieties I want will be sold out.

So...is there a Garden Webber out there who received a printed catalog and has time to look up the prices and availability of the last of the items on my wish list?

Have you already placed your order? In between watering and blow drying your catalog, that is. Can I add something for you to my order? BTW...I suspect we're only about 100 miles apart.

Well, shrubs, I don't disturb the soil much with my method of growing potatoes. I simply lay the seed potatoes on the surface and cover with mulch, usually chopped leaves. Harvesting involves pulling the mulch off and picking up the spuds. Having said that, while Ma Nature doesn't get out there with her 6 HP Troy-Bilt tiller, I don't see her growing much in the way of eggplant, peppers and tomatoes out in the wild either. I wonder why that is? I'm in favor of a program of limited tilling when it is necessary. When is it necessary? Every garden or field will be different but if the difference is not tilling and waiting years for the earthworms to do their thing so I can grow a carrot or getting organic matter into the soil and crops off it in the same year, then some form of tilling is the way to go for me. I double dig most of my raised garden beds. The disturbance of the soil structure seems to have little to no visible negative effects and I for one am not alarmed at harming the mycorrhizal fungi. Nor am I going to avoid tilling when it will benefit me in order to avoid injuring the earthworms. (Earthworms, which as noted in other threads, are noxious invaders of this northern forest I call home.) Nor will I rely soley on methods Ma Nature uses to build soil, since in my limited years left on the planet and my need to feed myself during those years, I recognize that Ma Nature has had approximately a 10,000 year head start on me in the soil-building department. Here are some thoughts from the southern fringe of the Hill Country, AKA Canyon Lake. Water and electricity are expensive but to well heeled folk moving here it doesn't seem to be an issue to scrap bare the native vegatation and transpose what ever city concept of plants they choose to use. They bring in "top soil" (with weeds:( and want their city lawn grasses. I guess what I am saying is many new folks moving in and think they want what they had from where ever they came from to grow here. Some even succeed to a degree but many learn over a few years not to try and subjugate Mother Nature and learn to adapt often after they have destroyed their ecosystem. On the other hand there is a groundswell of people moving in that appreciate Mother Nature and try to adapt to their environmnent and utilize the local plants to make their landscapes an extentsion of the surrounding area. Getting involved with the Master Gardner program will be a big plus. It is what I did when I came to Texas from Hawaii 11 years ago. I would also look at the Master Naturalist program to further educate you about the local flora and fauna. Deer will be an issue so learning about the basics of plants that are deer resistant (there is not such a thing as deerproof IMO:). Many folks will do raised beds to adapt to the area instead of trying to punch holes in the limestone rock. I would expect you to do just fine with finding work after a period of adjustment and real Hill Country living. Welcome to the Hill Country and enjoy the majestic beauty that abounds here and look to educate those behind you how to help keep Austin weird and the Hill Country, the Hill Country. An Eagles song says a lot for how I feel about the Hill Country or any place we humans call Paradise. The song is Paradise Lost. I love the Hill Country and try to help other keep it that way as a horticulturist and garden center manager. Mulch of choice local when possible, red cedar if not. I am of the camp that termites are not an issue except those that build on the ground. I am on pier and beam so I would see tunnels before any damage would be done. Wrong era kitchen in 1916 house... your input requested!

if you get this house, you really need to live in it a year before you start major remodels. it took us 2 years in our 4square to come up with an intelligent kitchen design. we did re-arrange things several times. check in the basement and see if there are any signs from previous remodels-- holes from gas/water lines. Our final kitchen plan after 2 years was identical to the orginal lay-out-- all the holes for gas, electric, plumbing and heating were right where we wnet to put everything. we bought our cabients, fixtures, appliances after we decided where evrything was going to go and what we liked. medium oak, beige tile, atainless appliances, off-white flooring (major error), almond countertops. each time an item wen on sale we bought it and stored all in the basement. we waited until we installed to order the counters. we moved everything out of the kitchen. hooked up the microwave in the dining room. stripped it all to the four walls, and scrubbed it all down on saturday. Sunday we painted, walls, wood work & ceiling. Monday I laid the sheet vinyl floor. Tuesday I put in all the base cabients. replaced to stove, fridge and rehooked up the sink. plywood went down as temp counters. Wed i installed the ceiling fan--i was desperate, the recessed light over the sink and the wiring for new electric above the backsplash. Thursday I hung the upper cabients and the stove hood. Friday they came to measure for counters and i put away all the dishes and stuff. Two week later the counters got installed-- done by home depot. i finished the tiles work for the backsplash, and installed the new sink and faucet. we could have eaten out for the 1st 3 days if necessary. I'm not really handy when it comes to house repairs. but i got top of the line cabients for 40% off, got the flooring for 60% off-- it was a discontinued pattern. Tiles for backsplash were also very cheap ($ .25 each 4x4) all from open boxes-- had to pick thru one by one), saved about $150 on the stove and $200 on fridge, bought the ceiling fan at the end of the summer sales saved 25%. The sink was a display model (30% off) and faucet we got 10% off because we opened an account at lowes. The only labor that we paid for was for the countertop installation that I didn't want to try doing alone. my wife helped to take stuff out of the kitchen and paint. I watched out twin 4 year olds and did the rest by myself since i was working 3-11 shifts at the time. After 15 years it's time for more work-- tile floor, solid surface counters, a dishwasher, new faucet and disposal. then a gas range and electric oven and a new fridge. ill do the floor, others can do the rest. hope you get the house. but live with the kitchen first until you know what you want. do like the red/white deco scheme you have in mind. you might consider 'quilted' steel backsplashes and a stainless hood. diggerb

A few more updates.. Within the last couple of days, two sapodilla seeds have sprouted, and just today, I saw that two of the Peruvian apple cacti had sprouted, but they were right behind the plant tag, and I didn't see them until moving the tag. I've also got some white pitaya (dragon fruit) seedlings that have been sprouting over the last week or so. I'd all but gave up on many of these things, but I guess there is some hope for things that haven't sprouted so far. Still hoping for some A. Reticulata, A. Squamosa, Mexican cream guavas, purple star apple, blackberry jam fruit, phalsa berries, and jujubes that I'd recently planted (after cracking the shell and soaking in hot water for several days, with several water changes) from a seedling tree I had. So far, I've also had 4 out of the 7 chestnut seeds sprout. So, the final number that will have sprouted will be between 4 and 7. I'll probably propagate them in larger numbers next season, as long as I can verify the type and where they were grown. If nothing else, I could use them as rootstock for grafting. Lastly, I planted out the new unframed no-till (back to Eden) raised bed with two cassava plants and five sweet potato plants. I'll probably go back in after all of this rain and flooding and fill in the area with peanuts as well. It has a higher sand content than any of my other beds.

Both Glenn and I grew Neckargold this year. Unfortunately, I did not get word that he was having problems with it until late in my season so mine were planted late. End result was that I had a small crop and he also got a small crop. It is enough to offer beans limited to 1 pkt.

I also grow the Blue Marbut beans for Glenn. If you have a chance, get a pack and give them a try. They make a wonderful color contrast with the Neckargold in bean salad and the flavor is excellent.

Thank you DarJones. I remember you suggested Blue Marbut when I asked a couple weeks ago if anyone had received a printed catalog yet. They somehow slipped "below the line" on my wish list.

I like your suggestion about the contrast between Neckargold and Blue Marbut. I have an odd way of managing my pole beans anyway. Since I have very little space, crop rotation is out, and the pole beans grow in the same area each year. I generally try something new each year, but I also get lots of volunteers from beans of years past. I call it the "feral bean patch." It's only about 20' long, so I assume a fair amount of crossing goes on. I must admit, some things turned up last year that looked nothing like what I remember ever planting. And the colors of the shelled beans? Geez, a bag of them looks almost like one of those bags of mixed soup beans you see in the grocery store.

Back to Sand Hills ... in addition to Neckargold, I put Jeminez on my order form since milehigirl was so kind as to advise me of the price. I don't suppose you know the price of Blue Marbut, do you? Thanks!

Thanks, Dar. I guess bitter melon will have to wait unless I can find it locally, which is doubtful. I don't need enough other things to justify an order to anyone else than Sand Hill.
