Daffodils breaking ground!?!

HI. Last year I planted a few hundred daffodils. They were gorgeous!

I went outside to do some winterizing and was supprised to see many daffodil leaves starting to break ground.

Is that normal ?!?

Will they still bloom in the spring?

We had a long cold front come in followed by some warmer temps for a few weeks, is that why?

I am having the same problem.

I went outside this morning to find all my summer irises coming up that i planted 2 weeks ago.

Also my daffodils and some spring crocuses. They are all in pots in a large cold frame so im not sure if that is helping at all.

I am concerned i will not get my spring and summer flowers!

Its a little early. Mine usually pop up in November or sometimes December and then sit doing nothing until February or so.

If you're looking to break acres of new ground you're probably going to want to go with a tractor / pull behind setup like this: https://www.amazon.com/Tiller-Behind-Garden-Tractor-Width/dp/B01LBFLNGM You can see in this video just how easy it makes the job, especially if you're needing to do acres of ground. If you weren't needing to till acres, then you could look for a tiller to break new groundthat is something like a rear or front tine tiller. There's a lot of good options out there, but it's going to depend on your budget and even future use for the equipment. You can even check out companies like Agri Fab or Earthquake as they both have some options that could work out for you. Hope you find something that works! :)

Breaking up new ground for garden

I have had good luck on grassy sod using the modified lasagna method. I only used what I had on hand: A layer of very wet newspapers (several thicknesses), a layer of old alfalfa hay and some straw. During the winter I would lift a section and layer in my kitchen waste which was mostly coffee grounds and egg shells with some green stuff. By spring (did this in the fall) I could dig in the sod with my hands by lifting the mulch and then planting. I only did this with roses and tomato plants and some daylilies. I didn't use it for seeds. Of course I don't have hard pan or clayey soil or even very rocky ground....I lucked out in that department. It has been several years ago and I now need to layer some flakes of the old hay back in place again just to keep things neat. If you have access to more organic matter such as grass clippings and manure that will speed up the process. You could also first plant a green manure crop shallowly and then begin layering right over it. once it gets some size. Good luck. I am curious why you want to go so deep?

They always do that for me too. They'll be allright in spring. A good thing too, especially if you want to add more bulbs. This way, you'll know where not to dig. :-)

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one, thought I must have done something wrong!!!

You can mulch them after the ground freezes so that the leaf tips are protected from the severe cold, otherwise they tend to get burned and ratty.

I always have some foliage in the fall, but I now have daffodils blooming!!

They are BLOOMING!!! Oh my goodness!

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I guess there was no reason to worry after all. I'll throw bark mulch on them for the winter.

Daffodils are blooming now? Wow. Although I should add that my hubby noticed today that our forsythia is blooming. Not massively all over, but many scattered flowers. This is the latest we have ever gone without frost in all my gardening years in zone 5, although in a few days we will finally get it. Global warming seems pretty real to me!

Alot of my spring bulbs have foliage. No tulips or hyacinths, though. (grape hyacinths have been sporting foliage for months now). I like this as it allows me to know precisely where they are for 'relocation' in the fall. Iris SHOULD have foliage right now in most zones, if not all. This gives them energy for blooming next year. I think it is natures little way of letting the bulbs tell us 'Hey! Here I am! Don't dig me!' at a time of year when we are planting alot of other things in the garden.
