Have I just killed my hyacinth bulbs?

Well last Sunday I decided to divide my hyacinth bulbs. I read somewhether fall is the season to divide.

I dug up the bulbs I planted in fall 2005. I saw there are 8 smaller bulbs almost of the same size clustered together when I dug up the first one. But I broke off some of the white tender roots when I used force to separate the 8 bulbs even though I tried to be really careful. I also accidentally broke off some roots when I dug them up.

I planted them back in the old location 4 inches apart from each other, watered them, that's it. There were 1/3 as much white roots left as before I dug them up.

Also I separated them the same way I separated garlics.

Now I worry that I may have killed the bulbs. It's just that I didn't expect the roots are so crisp and tender, and so easy to break off.

Thank you for your responses.
