Keeping tender annuals through winter

As summer winds down, I find myself with several pots of beautiful but tender annuals that I would like to try to overwinter. I was wondering; rather than take many cuttings and trying to keep then limping along during Connecticut's short winter days, has anyone out there tried to cut the plants back and store them in a root cellar much like dahlias and begonias?I am considering treating my clary sage, lemon verbenas and agastache to a winter in our 45-50 degree barn. Any advice is welcome.Susanan
