Tried it, both liquid and the granule stuff. The squirrels/ rabbits were like, "Thank you for the seasoning" and went ahead and ate the stuff anyway. Or they waited for the next rainstorm or after I watered. Whatever the case it didn't work, even after a day of use. I also used cinnamon, both powdered and oil form. That helped with some success. At least until either it rained or the stuff wore off. But being too expensive to apply on a regular basis, didn't help. (But I'll add specifically for this topic, the powdered form of cinnamon did not do anything for bulb planting.) But so far the trick I did mixing like thai hot pepper garlic + Habanero seeds + neem oil and rubbing on/ soaking on approx.. 41 daffodil bulbs seems to be helping. I left one half rotted bulb out with said treatment just to allow them to try one. That one was tried and shredded, but very few others have been dug up since then. But it remains to be seen if it will work in the long run.

Lefleur1 and prairiemoon--My sure fire earwig bait. I have never set this out in the evening without having some earwigs in the container in the morning. Note--baby earwigs are grey and turn red as they age so don't think it is another bug. Baby earwigs are ravenous when they hatch and can strip a plant down to the stem in 1 night Bait for Earwigs. Equal parts of full salt soy sauce, cooking oil and (molasses or corn syrup). The molasses or syrup is bait to attract them--the oil doesn't allow them to crawl back out and the salt in the soy sauce finishes them off and makes the mixture dark so they think it is just a hole. Put it in a small container��" I use those small scoops from laundry soap and place a stone on top but you can use any small container even the bottom of a soda or water bottle and anything for a lid. Cover 1/2 inch of the bottom of the container with the mixture and bury it up to the brim in the soil where you have a problem with them. Prop a lid over it so it doesn't get diluted by rain and so it is a nice dark place for them to hide for the day--ha. When you prop the lid, leave a small space for them to crawl into the container. You might have to wait a couple of days for it to work, but the first time I tried it I used a baby food bottle and it was full to the brim with little grey baby earwigs the next morning. I was surprised at just how many I did get. Try it. It really works

Actually, no not yet.....(I know chicken!) I did cut back the one honeysuckle that I'm keeping, to 4 feet. The other one and the bittersweet have still to come out. I am just taking a break from digging out the monster rose that does not bloom. (once in 4 years) It will leave that bed bare looking for a while, but I guess if I'm desecrating the garden, go for broke, right? Oh, well got some nice pics while I had the spring flush of roses. That will have to do for a while, or only do close ups... I bought a Lambert Closse to plant in place of the bush I am removing. Hope that one will do ok there. Also have 2 Simon Fraser to plant in that bed. Hmmm....wonder if I have room? I dug out a Carefree Beauty from the other bed when I redid that bed. CB sat in the wheelbarrow for a week. Just didn't know where to stick it. It was trying so hard to hang on that I didn't have the heart to get rid of it, so planted it in a big pot this morning. It just got too big where it was planted. Seems to be a problem I have. If they say 3-4 feet I can plan on 5-6 feet! So I am hard at it today and tomorrow. DH is gone for the weekend. I got up early and started as it is supposed to be in the 90's with high humidity today and tomorrow. Marylu

It would seem to me that your success will be governed more by the current condition and health of the trees rather than just necessarily the lateness of the season - depending on where you are located, it is not at all too late to plant. In fact, in parts of zone 7 and in 8 and above, planting can take place at any time during the winter. Entire landscapes are routinely planted in my area throughout winter. However, end-of-season clearance sales at box stores are usually not the great deals one would imagine. Plants that are stockpiled and virtually ignored through the growing season are a pretty safe bet to be seriously stressed and compromised if they are still hanging around in December :-) And then there is the investment in time and effort to plant them or otherwise care for them now through winter, which poses some risks anyway. Depending on your specific location and suitability NOW for planting, you might want to treat these similar to what they do in retail nurseries and heel them in until late winter or early spring. Often, sawdust piled generously over the B&B rootballs will suffice - compost or heavy mulch would work the same. But regardless of the approach you take now, you really won't know until growth starts next season as to the viability of these clearance items.
