Get Gritty Mix ingredients in NYC.

Mr. John from HeritageOrchards.com is selling all TAPLA Gritty mix ingredients. He is coming to deliver in NYC in first week of April. He has very good pine bark fines, Gran-I-Grit and Turface. He is very helpful. Shipping cost can be low for New Yorkers if we can order it before first week of April.

Thanks for posting this, Imran. It looks like he's got the right stuff, and his price looks decent too.

For myself, I am located in central NJ, about 1 h from NYC. I just e-mailed him about delivery to NJ. Was told that he'd only come my way if 4-5 other orders are placed from NJ. So...is anyone else in NJ interested?

Yes Alex, I also think the stuff is good. He told me that shipping will be much less if there are more people from New York or New Jersey.

For anyone who searches this later- There's a Napa auto parts store where you can buy floor dry up in orem, it's part 8822., As of this writing it's 5.99 for a 24 quart bag. there's also a ewing irrigation in orem that sells Turface, For about 12 dollars a bag. I'm not sure how big these bags are, but on amazon they're fifty pounds. It's a choice between one or the other above. I think I'm going to go with Napa floor dry because the rumor is that there is fewer fines in those bags You can get a twenty-four quart bag of repti bark for 25.99 at petco. The pieces looked a little big in the bag, but I'm willing to break it up if need be. The only thing i'm having trouble finding is the crushed granite. It's my understanding that any non-pourous rock would do so I think I'm going to go with aquarium gravel which seems to be the appropriate size. A twenty five pound bag is 18.99 at petco. My only concern if whether or not they have a bag that isn't rainbow the next time I go up.

How big are the mango trees? If you have to move moderately sized trees in and out every year (as you must in Canada?) then I would suggest you replace the granite with something else. The only reason I would use the granite for a tree in a pot larger than ~8" is if you're worried about it being blown over or etc. It just makes the pots far too heavy to deal with. I ended up using ~1-1.5 bags of the gran-i-grit which put some pots at 75 lbs just for the granite component. The granite can be replaced with similarly sized perlite, charcoal, or anything else that doesn't hold significant quantities of water. Perlite would be the lightest option but you should check to see if mangos have any known issues with fluoride sensitivity (it's only an issue for a few types of plants). If you use charcoal make sure to wash it well to begin with and handle it gently as it is obviously more fragile than the granite etc.. I've used reptibark in the past and it will work - it is probably slightly larger than ideal and it is *very* expensive for what you get. You might even be able to mail order pine bark for less than you'll pay for the 24qt reptibark bags necessary for a large tree...

No Clue, This link may help you... Remamber to moisten the mix before you add to the pot. I take my mix that is nmake and add water and mix it all around to make sure the bark and the turface has some moisture in the mix, I dont soak , but i will mist the roots before i pot up. When i screen my turface, i do use a kitchen strainer and it does a great job sifting out the smaller fines fron the Turface, I save these little fines for seeds.. The 1/4 in screen can be found at any hardware dealer;;box stores etc. TYou dont have to buy a huge roll either. They seell smaller bags of screen for repaalcement screens and such. MY DH made screen like AL's. He made them a little larger than AL's, lol nut he did a great job. You dont even have to go through that process if you dont want to. you could lay the screen over a container, like a wheelbarrow and sift over that to collect the fines or fir bark that fall thr the 1/4 screen. This would be for the gritty Mix. I would suggest that you go back and reread the above link that AL wrote ..it took me several times to finally get it and it also has pics of his screen too! I hope this helps.. I dont fertilize until a couple of weeks in the new mix. then i reduce it by half and then the following week, i start at the normal amount of Foliage Pro. Always take your newly planted trees and keep them from direct light..you want then to acclimate them to the new surroundsing and not cause any stree, Then after several weeks, put them back into the sun. Goofd Luck..learn how to watch the mix as it drys.. you want to use the wet /dry cycle on all of your Plumeria. in any mix that you choose. O awwoden skewer is a great tool to use.. put it in..if it is wet dont water..it is is dry..,water..if ur not sure..then water lightly... I'm glad you found SW Fertilizer already. I had talked to one of their Soil guys a few years ago and explained the two mixes, he was trying to work out how to best to do Bonsai and was very grateful for the head start. But their grit is the Oyster-Shell product as you already found out. Steinhauser's, either the one in Alvin on Hwy 6, or the one out West on I-10, has the Gran-I-Grit in stock all the time. PetCo is where I usually get fir bark, but my own drought-killed pine trees have kept me supplied with bark recently, what a mixed blessing... And if you haven't gone in to Wabash Feed on Washington St yet, you are in for a real treat and I envy you. Get you some Micro-Life fert there or at SW Fert, and thank me later. :-) Potting some volunteer Panzarella Lemon babies this weekend that sprouted from fallen fruit, so stopped in to refresh myself on the Recipes. Let me know if you want a few of these, they are ridiculously huge fruit and very tasty if seedy. Rick

He has a flat rate shipping of $30.00 for orders less than 60Lbs, $50.00 for all other orders. But he needs at least 25 orders from NY/NJ area.
I though, I should update people who are interested in gritty mix.

Website is down too.

Gowanus nursery has Bark Fines usually. There is also the Urban Garden Center at 116th St. Not sure on quality of either place since I got mine from an Agway reseller. I'll be checking both out in the next couple of weeks to see if there quality is good.

Thanks please make sure to post if you find the bark. I ended up getting some on a work trip to Maryland but always good to have another source. I found growers grit somewhere in Long Island that offered to deliver to queens. . I ordered from john last year. I don't know the gritty was actually screened but he was easy to deal with. He ran out of some of my ordered items and quickly refunded me.

If anyone is interested, Amazon has a seller selling Turface for a high-but-less-than-I-have-paid-including-shipping price. For my car-less state, it's a bargain. It might work for others.

That is pretty funny if you look at the frequently bought together it lists the granite grit although a small bag

I also ordered from John last year.

He ran out of some of the items I ordered, however, he did not quickly refund me. He told me he would come back the following weekend with the balance of my order (some 15 bags of pine bark, and various bags turface and grit if I remember properly) and then promptly vanished from the face of the earth. No reply to my phone messages, e-mails, etc. Eventually I had to fight the charges through my credit card.

It is no surprise to me that his website went down.

This year I got my pine bark from Agway and it is pretty good, though I find myself spending a bit more time than I'd like picking out sapwood.

The Lowes in Gowanus sells pine bark fines. I got one bag to test. The fines were totally composted; it was more like a bag of soil; not suitable for the 511. Hope that saves someone a trip.

Still waiting to check on the Gowanus nursery and Harlem's Urban Garden Center.
