Bachelors button, Calendula and Carnation seeds
Comments (8)Before planting outside this time of year, it's necessary to know if each plant is perennial, which I don't offhand, especially bachelor button which could refer to several different sun-loving plants. If not perennial, are they able to handle frosts? In zone 9, you'll have a few frosts. Some plants grow better when it's cool, some when it's hot. By researching these things, you should be able to determine whether they are OK to plant/put outside now, or if the seeds would be better started outside in the spring. You had great success with them sprouting! In general, they look like they're leaning toward the light. I just planted pansies and snaps for winter too, they should do well until it gets too hot. Pansies probably won't live through summer, can't take heat or dryness. Snaps should stay alive if they don't bake too badly, seem to handle drying out much better than a lot of other plants, bloom almost constantly....See MoreBachelor buttons flopping over
Comments (5)transplant shock. Uaually you seed these things direct in the soil. So if these don't recover within a day or two, it's probably not going to recover at all. So best to sprinkle new seeds now and you will soon have more up. I can understand the need to start the seeds indoors when you are in a zone 4, so perhaps next time over, use those compostable pots so you can transplant the plants with minimal damage. All you will need to do is tear off the bottom of the pot. I must say though that peat pots or newspaper pots are so susceptible to molds that I personally hate using them. Instead there are now those corn pots or coconut husk pots that could minimize the mold issue. another alternative - is a take on wintersowing. Instead though you plant the seeds in late fall direct in the soil, top it with the top half of a pop bottle and leave them there thru winter. When it starts to germinate - you can remove the 'dome'. Comments (6)How often are you watering it? My guess is it is getting too much water, and the roots are rotting. If that is the case, there is not much that can be done. High heat, moisture control potting mix, possibly overwatering and watering at night can all be bad combos. I would take the plant out of the pot and examine the roots to see how healthy they are. Have you been checking the plant to see if it needs water before you water it? If not, do so. Plants do need to dry down some between waterings. Also water first thing in the morning or during the day. I would not worry about burning the plant. Watering at night or evening does not give the plant a chance to dry down overnight and can invite rot and diseases. I would personally not use moisture control potting mix due to the fact it can hold too much water....See Morecornflower bachelor button high desert
Comments (6)With very few exceptions**, heat is not an issue for growing annuals.......in fact, most thrive on it. It is more a matter of sunlight and adequate water. Very few are going to be very drought tolerant regardless of how hot it might get :-) **There are such things as cool season annuals (often half hardy perennials) that actually germinate and grow best in cooler weather. Snapdragons, pansies, calendula, nigella, annual lobelia are examples of some of these. They tend to die off in midsummer or in extreme heat but thrive in spring and fall. And in some cases, even into winter....See Morenoinwi
