Amethyst in snow bachelor's button help

My bachelor's button is dying. It has been very hot out. 105+. I moved it to shade, but I'm not sure what to do. The leaves are turning yellow. The flowers are wilting bad.

It is in moisture control potting soil. I read the amethyst type needs more water than other types. Watered from above. Wondering if that is a problem. Watered at night to avoid burns.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

How often are you watering it? My guess is it is getting too much water, and the roots are rotting. If that is the case, there is not much that can be done. High heat, moisture control potting mix, possibly overwatering and watering at night can all be bad combos. I would take the plant out of the pot and examine the roots to see how healthy they are. Have you been checking the plant to see if it needs water before you water it? If not, do so. Plants do need to dry down some between waterings. Also water first thing in the morning or during the day. I would not worry about burning the plant. Watering at night or evening does not give the plant a chance to dry down overnight and can invite rot and diseases. I would personally not use moisture control potting mix due to the fact it can hold too much water.

insert finger.. an inch or two into the pot.. and water when a plant needs water ... i would prefer to rely on my finger.. than use water retaining media ...and random comments read online ....

also.. you can tell how sodden a pot is.. by lifting it.. it should NOT weigh a lot ... related to pot size ...

how about a pic of the whole plant ... im wondering how big the pot is ... in regard to heat retention at night ..

where are you.. can it be planted in the ground ... etc ..how will you winter it over ....

Sounds like you want groundcovers If soil is moist or mulched try golden creeping jenny or vinca minor (various colors of flowers available & even variegated foilage types). If you tend the spot regularly & remove the runners you can enjoy the burgundy or variegated foliage of creeping carpet bugle or Ajuga. It sends runners in spring through summer, so needs tending or will overrun into other plants. With care & moisture it's a tough plant that doesn't mind being stepped on some. If soil is more dry you could try any of the thymes plus you can harvest the culinary types. Have you tried London Pride, Saxifraga x urbium? There are several Saxifragas that are low growing. Have you tried sedums or sempervivium? There are numerous low growers to select from. Go to your local independent nursery and ask them to show you the groundcover section. Have your list handy & you should find at least one or several plants that fit your requirements. They should know what is hardy in your zone as well & have those plants available if not sold out for the season.

Lantana reseeds here. So I've already sown mine. Datura should wait just a bit. I'll sown mine in late March. Too much moisture will rot the seeds. Brugs need warmth, I've started mine indoors in a moist paper towel stuffed in a baggie. Castor beans are warm weather plants too. Wait til frost is gone. Cleome likes a little cold. I've sown mine now. Had good luck sowing them in March too. Parsley is another that I would wait on the frost to end. Bachelor buttons can go out now. Not sure about the others, but I've sown my godetia. First time with it.

First, welcome! I spotted those seeds and posted about them a couple weeks ago. That was a great deal! I don't remember all I picked up, about a dollar's worth, seems not quite as large an assortment as you found, but I got my Sweet William, 2 pkts of it. Also got Canterbury Bells and coleus, couple more I can't remember. I don't even know if I like coleus well enough to plant it this year; I save some for next year usually anyway, most still germinate at least some. Most of what is on your list either wasn't there or I didn't want it. Several you list I'd already bought plenty online. The seeds said they were packed for this year so assume they're fresh, too, think mine are American Seed Co.

I read that the amethyst needs more water than the regular button. It was doing fine until this heat wave hit. It's only slightly damp by morning. By 10 am it's close to dry. By five pm it's very dry.

I'm in Kansas. So it's a dry heat. I cannot plant it in the ground. The pot is probably a tad small, but I'm not allowed any larger. This is to feed my tortoise.

I try to water it in the morning, but I don't always get to it in time.

Notice the healthy plants are bone dry, but this one is still wet? It wasn't like that before now. I removed a lot of dead leaves. Plan to finish tonight.
