big daff bulbs or small ones?

HD has really large daff bulbs (The ones in the sack) for 13.99 for 40. I believe they are Dutch Master. The package says 100-150 blooms. Are these a better option than the smaller bulbs (40 for $9.99)? I'm looking for a good show this spring, but also for these to multiply over the years.

The big bulbs are huge..probably 3 times the size of the smaller ones.

I've gotten a big show out of big bulbs from the online importers AND from loads of smaller bulbs from the big box stores. I believe you get a bigger flower from a bigger bulb when it comes to the big-trumpet daffs like Dutch Master. But there's something to be said for a mass of smaller faces too.

BTW, have you ever tried those that are covered with tiny flowers like the Tazettas?

If you are in zone 10, I'm wondering if you can grow daffs, without having to lift them yearly and chill them yourself to see blooms other than just the first season. I am assuming that the bulbs you are purchasing have been prechilled.

If you are in Zone 8 or warmer, you must pre cool your bulbs for at least ten weeks prior to planting or good root development.

Crud!! That certainly makes sense as we did have several significant freeze / thaw cycles here in Western Washington. Which, by the way, is not typical. We usually don't have much in the way of a "hard" freeze here in the Puget Sound region but this has been a VERY hard winter replete with inches of SNOW and weeks of FROZEN ground! Poor little Minnow and TÃªte-Ã -TÃªte's. :( I feel like a murderer!! Wish I had read up on bulbs in pots a little more thoroughly. Thanks for the information. Much appreciated. :)

A real pity that you did not fertilize. Reliable and significant mass gain is only achieveable by regular feeding. (I pray that all the time) Last year my bulb of the very particular cultivar "dalongbowdrawer" quadrupled in size and yielded eight stems solely from the mother bulb and 12 from the freshly emerged offsets. Gosh, that was great experiences - However, this exaggerated formation of daughter bulbs forces me to repot twice a year and will certainly drive me crazy some day. Hans-Werner

I would be interested in trading for all the above plants, also any other aquarium plants you might have to trade. I recently moved and am just starting up my 55 gallon aquarium again and it has no plants. I mainly only have white irises, no named ones except Iris ensata 'Variegata'. I have a few named daylilies back at my old house that I haven't moved yet; 'Rose Red', 'Chorus Line', 'Little Grapette', and 'Ruby Red'. I also have many named land plants to trade but my list is not up to date since I haven't traded any this year because I've been moving. Let me know if you're interested in trading. Small bathroom, small budget, big irritation, big plea for help

I think we're going to have to have an electrician come in and rewire the house or something. The bathroom, the two fan lights in the kitchen, and the lights in the main room in the basement go out all the time. Doesn't matter what kind of bulbs we put in there, they burn out. Yet the light over the sink is on pretty much 24/7 and it's been replaced like once in 16 years. For the last long while, we quit buying the "good" bulbs b/c if we get three months out of them, that's a good length of time for us, but the cost is outlandish to replace that often for bulbs that rarely are used. The cabinet door goes to shelving in the hall. If we didn't have the shelving, we'd lose quite a bit of storage, so we can't take the shelves out to put a hamper in there.

IÂm in Northern CA, near San Francisco. Based on the Zone Finder, IÂm in Zone 10, but on the milder side (lots of microclimates here). The Daffs around the area always return and spread; I had some last year which were not pre-chilled, and they performed beautifully. The neighborhood is filled with blooming Daffs in spring, IÂm assuming from the previous yearsÂ planting.

chemocurl - I think it has more to do with soil temperature at planting time - and soil type. And how far down the heat/dry has penetrated over the summer.

Frosts in my area get down to -7C (rarely) - and my summer range is seldom greater than 25C. Humidity is moderate - definitely not sub tropical, thank goodness!

My Narcissus in the ground have usually started into root growth at the end of January-beginning February (mid-summer for me). There is enough coolth and moisture for them. So I don't fridge at all. For anything. Past experience has shown me that doing so leads to severe losses.

And I know that's not true for others. It's just my microclimate and general maritime climate conditions. People just over the hill, on the coast, have a zone 10 rating - and they also have no trouble growing Narcissus, Leucojum and similar bulbs (along with tamarillos and mountain pawpaw and other yummy treats. Grrr!)

Personally, I am always awed by the huge effort the inland continental gardeners put in every year to get brilliant displays from their bulbs. Very humbling, and great to learn from. Thanks.
