Any harmless way to keep squirrels away from bulbs?

We recently bought the house and previous owners didn't do much gardening. This summer we amended and prepared the soil for our new garden that I want to grow but I don't have much experience. I love bulbs and will order lilies, daffodils, hyacinth, snowdrops, and a few others. My concern are squirrels and chipmunks in the area. They already ate my tomatoes I grew from seed and I don't want my bulbs to suffer the same fate. I also recently planted some clematis and we saw a few shallow holes around them they dug, but no harm because the clematis roots are planted very deep. I don't want to use any method that can be harmful to these cute animals either. Does anyone have any tips for protecting bulbs that keep squirrels away?
