any suggestions for making balcony storage more attractive?

I have a very small balcony where I need to keep some gardening supplies....potting soil, perlite, tools etc. Right now they are either in clear plastic boxes or else just sitting out in the open (the bag of perlite). I looked into garden storage boxes or seats with storage but they are all too big for my balcony. And storing this stuff indoors is also not an option...

So...what can I do to make my 'stuff' more attractive..or how can I integrate it so it looks nicer...more natural....? Maybe find some kind of a natural or burlap bag or rattan box or something to keep my soil/perlite in...something that would look more attractive than a green plastic bag with a Hartz label on it? And something that could also stand up to rain and snow and still look good and not rot? ;-)

Any ideas appreciated. My balcony has a white cement floor and black iron railngs so I'm trying to do whatever I can to soften the look as much as possible....

I would suggest a pool box. One meant for storing supplies next to the pool. They come in all different shapes and sizes, many are quite attractive, and the sturdier ones will provide a bench seat as well.

You could also certainly build a wood one yourself. Your skill level will determine how nice it actually looks when finished, lol, but there's not too many things easier to build than a box with a hinged top.

A storage bench? I have one similar to the one on the link below. It depends on the space you have. It's nice to have a place to sit.

You can go to a park or out in the woods or woodlot with some sunflowers. Hang a can on a twig or put sunflower seeds on a picnic table that doesn't get used often. Next day, go to where the seeds are and just stand quietly with your hand out (with seeds in it) where the 'feeder' was the day before. It usually only takes a few minutes for chickadees to land on your hand. The pictures you see were taken after only a few minutes of waiting for the birds to get used to me. I removed my feeder, then stood, leaning against the tree where the feeder was. I put some seeds on my hat and just stood still. After a few minutes of birds taking seeds off my hat, I shook those seeds off and held them in my hand. It only took a few minutes and I had several eating from my hand. A neat picture is: pinch a sunflower seed between your lips and hold your hand flat, like a platform, under your chin. The chickadees will land on your hand and take a sunflower seed from your lips. Looks like the birds are kissing you - so a neat picture. I also enjoy pinching a seed tightly so the bird has to peal away the hull and eat it while on your hand. Hi Erica, It is difficult to suggest since I live in a different zone (Portland, Oregon). However, I will write what I would do to make it prettier. In the place of "6 roses in front of the hedge" I would plant 6-7 roses "Double Knokout". That rose gives flower through the entire season with color giving an excellent contrast to the grass and the green hedge and a strong accent to your pretty pale house. Also I would plant 3 roses of the "Knokout" instead of the pink shrub rose. Knockout is slightly different from Double Knockout -- that will give a nice effect as well. You did very good by removing the ugly evergreen. The three trellises look very good as well. I would plant some of red climbing roses on them (in my region, blaze does very well, but Dortmunt and Dublin are very good as well). I would go with RED roses to give more color to the light bricks. In front of the trellises, you may have two and a half rows for different flowers (roses, Dahlias, Zinnias, etc). Higher and darker in the back row and smaller and lighter in the front row. I would also plant few bunches of Narcissus (Daffodils) between since they are the first flower ti give a strong impact in spring, and they are low maintainance plants, and they die back in May. Then few azaleas (for example Hino Crimson), since they flower just after Narcissus. In the rows I would plant different roses (or other flowers). From roses I would choose few of a rather small floribunda roses, for example Disneyland, since it gives spectacular and rather unusual colors. I'm very in red and yellow colors, then I would also add a line of marigolds on the edge along the path. I would also plant some ground cover levander to cover 50 % of the brown area (it is evergreen in my climate, and it is covered with flowers for a month). But before doing anything I would remove the existing roses, double dig the entire area, amend some organic matter to the soil. Then I would plant back the removed roses, add new plants, and mulch the area with a new dark, fine mulch.

This might be a custom job given the depth and the lack of clearance for swing or even retractable doors. Find a cabinetmaker in your area and show him your link. It may not be cheap, but you'll have a beautiful piece you can take with you wherever you go.

yes it is meant to recess between existing studs, is skinnier that a stud space so there is wiggle room. it sticks out @ 1”. Here is a pic of the Signature Hardware one we did. I hate to complain because it looked fine, fit the space well, easy and relatively cheap. This was for a last minute quick update of a bathroom before listing in 1 day, not committing to any serious work. It’s skinny (about a foot) and easy enough to cut a hole in drywall & pop it in. top pic is my phone pics B&A the 1-day makeover, 2nd pic was from the realtor pics. i doubt the paint on that cabinet was even dry. ETA yes we put the hinge on the left so the door did not hit the light. That part was fine, what I didn’t like was the body of the cabinet was a flimsy plastic shell. Plain stud space would have looked better inside.

tx but...my balcony is 40" x 120" !!! ;-) so even the smallest storage seat will take up too much space.... I already have a cafe table and chairs and a BBQ grill (for use up on the rooftop...no room to store it indoors and not allowed to keep it up on the roof).

Right now all my gardening supplies are in stacked up boxes that are 5" x 11". So that's about the footprint I need to work with...just want something that looks nicer than clear plastic storage boxes with plastic bags of soil and perlite sitting on top! ;-)

A wicker picnic basket? This is the kind of thing I used to go to Pier 1 for years ago when they were cheap and funky.

Take a trip to "The Container Store", they have all kinds of GREAT storage stuff. There's one on 6th Ave, and one at 58th & Lex.

A wicker basket...that sounds like just the look I'd like...but do you think it could remain outdoors 24/7...stand up to rain and snow?

As for the Container Store, I do love that place but have never seen anything outdoorsy looking...the only thing that might stand up would be their plastic containers I'd imagine....though I did just find this which could look a bit more outdoorsy than plastic boxes...though I'm not so keen on the black rubber look...but I will keep it as a potential item too. So thanks!

Wicker would not last forever (unless you get something made of the faux wicker they make now), but you'd get a couple/few years out of it. Don't spend a lot so that it doesn't upset you when it's ended its useful life and you have to toss it.
