Has anyone started Tidal Wave Petunias??
Comments (32)I have a greenhouse here in Washington and start varieties of "Waves" and others in my basement in February. Some germinate easier than others. Tidal Wave & Shock Wave are very similar, Tidal Wave Hot Pink has a pretty good germination rate. I use plug trays & for "Waves" I like the 200ct tray, one month from seeding to transplant. Seed shouldn't be covered & unless your using pelleted seeds, soil should only be moderate moisture but NEVER allowed to dry out. I like to bottom soak to water to avoid disturbing the surface. Germination is 5 to 15 days. DO NOT use fertilizer until you see the second set of leaves. DO keep the temperature from going under 65 or over 85 until visible, then keep around 65. I also use plug grade peat based potting mix and rub it through a fine screen for my trays, if your having problems with damping off, something is wrong with soil, temp, or amount of water I have never had that problem. I also never pinch. If they look "leggy" then either too much water, too much heat, not enough light, or a combination. It is also interesting to note that high Phosphate, not nitrogen causes stretching in Waves. I attached an image of a Baby Duck Yellow 12in basket, 5 plugs per basket. No pinching, half strength Plant Marvel Cal/Mag every time I water once established. Good Luck! Steve Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreDouble Wave Petunia Question
Comments (4)Melanie, with all that said, ive never not deadheaded an annual, except for Begonias. If it were me, i think i would pick a small side of the plant and dead head that spot and see if it does better with producing more flowers than the side left alone. I always think if i dont deadhead, i wont get as many blooms and the plant will get scraggly. Its maybe worth the experiment, that way you will know. Good luck Emma...See Moreanother question about Saving Petunia Seeds

Comments (5)Party makes a good point that if you can't have them outside until June then you have time to grow from seed. That sounds quite late to me as most of the zone 5 garden clubs want theirs by 1st week of May. But if you can't plant them out until June then you won't have the full basket look until well into the heat of mid to late July. The full basket look that you buy at most nurseries has been growing inside in a greenhouse for 45-60 days before going out for sale. " I want to know if I planted a couple of wave petunias in the side of a hanging basket, through a coco liner, would that also be problematic" Yes. They don't hang well and the weight pulls them out plus it causes a big drain hole for the water to drain out too quickly. And if you want to plant in holes in the sides of a hanging planter then you need to use sphangum moss not a pressed cocofiber liner. You want to plant them at the outer edges of the top so they drape over the sides and hang down the sides. Dave...See Morecalliope
