Ahhh......daffodils are blooming here NOW :-) Planting them at this time of year in the PNW will not result in flowering this season but the OP should see flowers from the bulbs next year. And in much of the PNW soils never freeze. Or no more than an inch or two in very cold weather but we've managed to avoid nearly any of that this season and no predictions for any more cold. We are running about 10 degrees above normal and have been since early December. We haven't even had any significant frost for several months.

I've successfully brought tulips into bloom at approximate latitude 31.0. Figure on a week in the fridge for every inch of stem length desired. Ten weeks will take you into March. I think at this late date, if you have room in a refrigerator, I would pot them, put the whole thing in a plastic bag and put them in to chill. If you use moisture control potting soil, you should not need to add additional water if the soil is slightly moist. There must not be apples in the refrigerator you use for chill. After about 10 weeks of chill, bring them out into a warm place and water. Shoots should appear in about two weeks. You could bring them out and sink the pots into the ground and let nature take its course, but since they're potted, you may as well enjoy them inside. These came out of the fridge around December 17 after 11 weeks of chill. Every spring I swear not to plant tulips again. Every fall, maybe just a handful of purple or some orange. Matthew, I am in zone 5 also, and "rescued" several bags of tulip bulbs that I had given to my daughter-in-law last fall -- which she never got around to planting. humph! But a couple of weeks ago, I planted them in potting soil as they had begun to sprout after sitting in cold garage for months, and they are growing!!! It remains to be seen if they will flower properly, but I have hopes that they will. It certainly wouldn't hurt if you did the same just to see what happens. Good luck!

I plant tulips and daffodils on January 1st. They have usually been sitting in the garage so they get some degree of winter chill. These bulbs bloom later than the same ones already in the ground but this extends the bloom time. The biggest problem this time of year is finding a nursery that still has a decent selection. I know a nursery in Lake Oswego on "A" avenue that still has a decent selection of spring blooming bulbs. Wish I could remember the name of it because I go there a lot.
