When to stop watering?
Comments (6)August and September are often the driest (and sometimes the hottest months) of the year in the Puget Sound area. Continue watering until the fall rains begin.....that can vary widely but typically October is a reasonable time to start tapering off. We may not get lots of rain even then but temperatures cool down enough so that evaporation of soil moisture is much less of an issue. I've never heard of backing off of watering to "harden plants off" - hardening off is typically associated with increasing cold hardiness. Watering should continue as long as the soil dries out rapidly and the need remains. Well-established plants will require less than those newly or more recently planted. And always water smartly - deeply but infrequently rather than lightly and often. Less frequent but deep irrigation will encourage plants to develop deep root systems and increased drought tolerance so they don't require as much water. Mulching well will also help to conserve soil moisture and reduce the need for supplemental irrigation, too. Sometimes it is even necessary to water in winter.......but not very often :-)...See MoreWhen should I stop watering?

Comments (4)I overseeded with Titan RX TTTF and did the normal water routine: 1. multiple daily mistings until germination period is over; l 2. early morning watering daily for 15 minutes per zone for a week; l 3. early morning for 15 min every other day for a week; 4. early morning watering for 30 minutes every 3 days for a week; 5. early morning watering for 45-60 minutes once per week Around number 5, I started noticing winter annuals like chickweed. I've stopped watering and decided to let Mother Nature handle things. I will return to #5 for the first few weeks of spring but then I plan on watering only when the lawn shows signs of drought stress....See MoreWhen to stop watering potato plants?
Comments (12)To the OP, I sounds like you can harvest now. I wouldn't water them anymore but it won't hurt if they get rained on. It doesn't matter much if they are grown in a container but I like to harvest my raised bed potatoes when the soil is just lightly moist which it was this weekend. I've never had Yukon Gold put out blossoms before and I've grown them at least a dozen times. Most other varieties I've grown have blossoms at least on some of the plants. This year I have Kennebec and Red Norland and both blossomed a few weeks ago but the plants haven't died back yet. I just harvested my Yukon Gold yesterday at exactly 3 months since I planted the seed potatoes. Yukon is never a big producer but I grow them because they are one of my favorite for flavor and they are also the earliest to mature. Got 21 lbs. from 22 seed potatoes. There were a couple stems in the bed that were still green and they ended up producing the few white skinned tubers that you can see towards the top left. I don't think they were from a volunteer that I missed last year since I had fingerlings in that bed. I think they are some type of russet that got mixed into the barrel where I bought my seed tubers....See Moreanna_beth
