Is it too late to plant seeds for blooms?

I just found a box of seeds that I forgot about! Is it too late for planting annuals like Marigolds, zinnias, daisys, etc...from seed right now? My goal was to plant them and then try to find the seeds for sharing and trading. I just don't want to plant them so late that I don't get to see a bloom or find out where the seeds are on the plants! LOL

What do you think? Thanks! Tamra

And perennial seeds can be planted now...and will come back next year as plants...right? I think?

what do you have to lose???

they might not survive as seeds until next year ... probably will might not ...

plant them .. instead of august flowers you might have sept flowers ... who cares ...

have fun .. plant them ..

i am just planting seeds here in zone 5 MI ... last week we were still in the frost zone .. this week near 100 degrees .. go figure ..

I'm reasonably sure marigolds and zinns will. Those two seem to do well (for me) even at this time of spring. I was wondering about the daisies myself, the ones I have are shasta (perennial), so I'm not sure about those.

It's not that late. I would just plant them since they are already here. What would you do with them if you don't plant them? They might be a little late, but at least you'll get to enjoy them.

Sunflower belongs to a group of plants described as being facultative long day bloomers. What this means is, sunflower will eventually bloom during the 'short day' period of the life cycle, so long as cultural conditions don't prevent it. Day length/photoperiod impacts the blooming of most plants. Actually, it's the length of the night that triggers photoperiod blooming responses, but that's another discussion. Sunflower blooms faster/better when day length is longer than about 14 hours, but as noted, WILL bloom under short day conditions (when the dark period is longer than the light period) - just not as readily as during long day stretches. You don't say where you live, but if there is danger of their freezing within the next 2.5-3 months, I wouldn't bother planting, as frost will take them before they can reach bloom stage. Nell, you have so many butterflies visit, don't you? We have a few, but it seems like we would see more than we do. I haven't seen tiger swallowtails in a few years here. :( I have seen a few other swallowtails this year though. -Sharon

OK, follow up. I couldn't sow them right away. I would like to sow them today or tomorrow. NHbabs, do you think it's too late now? Do they need very cool temps to germinate and grow? I still don't quite get how an annual can be sown to bloom in spring. It seems too soon! Would you sow them now? Anybody's opinion is welcome. I got some amazing seeds, but I don't want to waste a single one. I'll wait till next year if necessary.

Try planting half your seeds so that just in case they don't bloom successfully you'll have some blooms for next year. but you should try it.... you may very well get blooms for this year (though maybe not as many) And yes now is a perfect time to sow perennials. The sooner the better if you want to be assured of plant(flowers)next year and also smaller plants don't survive the winter as well.

I just planted some nasturium seeds today, and am about to plant cardinal climber and more zinnias. We still have a good 12 weeks of summer left here so I'll see what I get :)
