Are my lettuce containers big enough?

Hi, I am new to growing lettuce in containers. I purchased the plants in mid early January, and put most of them in containers. I am growing Romaine and another leafy lettuce (it said head lettuce on the tag). I have one large pot where I planted 3 romaine together, and they are doing quite well. Then I have a half whiskey barrel with both types of lettuce in it (5 plants total), and they are growing the best.

Then I put many of the leafy looking lettuce in individual smaller containers (one to each container), and these aren't doing well at all compared to the others. I noticed that in the drainage holes I can see roots peeking out. Does this mean the containers are too small? The containers are about 6-8 in in diameter and about 8-10 inches deep. I thought I read on this board that you can use pretty small containers for one head of lettuce. If this isn't the problem, any ideas what is wrong? Thanks
