Growing from Seed

Is this container big enough?

Hi,

I've planted some seeds in the past, but only a few in the windowsill. This year I'm getting a heat mat and flourescent lights and I'm going to plant some in the garage. I plan on planting the seeds toward the end of February and growing them in the garage until the beginning of April when I'll plant them in the yard. I plan on planting around 120 seeds. I was trying to determine the best containers to grow them in.

I was looking at something like this:

These are insert that are about 2 inches deep and 2 inches wide. If I planted my seeds in this, will they be able to remain in them for 6 weeks until I plant them in the yard or will they outgrow them. I'm trying to avoid transplanting them if I could.

I'm growing mostly annuals, things like zinnias, cosmos, snapdragons, etc.

Should I get something like this, or something bigger?

They are big enough, but so are the sixpacs the nurseries sell with annuals and are thrown away by the millions. I am using a type that open up to allow the rooted plant to be removed without digging it out of a two inch pot. They are called 'rootrainers' as the bottom is open enough to root prune potential tap roots. They come 32 to the tray with a plastic dome. I have found them at Lee Valley and Charlies Greenhouse supply. I watch for them on sale and pay about $12 each. They can be reused many times if not abused. Al

Purely observation but my strawberries seem to really appreciate bigger pots. All those I potted with the same amount of soil as your bottle have done just ok, the plants in bigger pots are really producing. If you cut the bottles about a quarter from the top and almost filled them with soil, I think you'd see a big difference. With the bottle you have there, I'd fill it almost to the top with the plant above the rim, cover the surface with a light coloured mulch (straw :p ) and don't forget drainage holes in the bottom.

(humble shrug... glad they went to a good home!) Sharp eyes will have noted that there is an error... like an idiot, somebody knew Mike selected Paradise Joyce and Paradise Glory - so he was thinking maybe the bonus plant should be Paradise Power and got that on his brain. But since Mike has quite a bit of sun, he got Fragrant Fire as a bonus instead. But that plant in the pic isn't Paradise Power - which is Marco's margined sport of Sun Power. That one is the one Mike asked for - Paradise Glory - which is Marco's (pretty sure tetraploid) sport of Paul's Glory. [I think it is identical to St. Paul from Shady Oaks - I can't tell any difference in the two - excellent plant!]

To Many Plants not Enough Pots

I now have a new problem, I have 6 pepper plants and 6 cherry Tomato Seedlings that need to be transplanted. I have no more pots of any type and I do not have the room in my seed closest to add bigger pots. I have a couple of ideas, I will spend my evening tonight working on some Ideas. I hope I have enough seed start mix left. Or I will be out buying and making more mix tomorrow.

If you want to substitute something that may come close to duplicating the Corriander taste, try a small thin (no pith) strip of orange peel or tangerine peel. In Mexico corriander seeds are boiled in sugar syrup for a sweet snack. Cilantro is an intereting herb. The new leaves are cilantro, but when the plant begins to grow and get some height, the leaves change to something very ferny and they don't taste very good anymore. But they do put out those wonderful corriander seeds. Adding about a quarter cup to a pan of apple cider while it is heating adds a very subtle citrus taste. Just strain them out before serving.

Hi

I use the 72 cell and have left the seedlings in there for longer than 6 weeks and they have done wonderfully. Space is always an issue. I only have some much room on top of the fridge and under the one light. Burpee sells them in a set and I have gotten them at home depot. I do know lowes has them also. I am not sure if they have the smaller sizes. They may be more cost effective buying them locally. I want to say that they may be $10.00.

Zinnias are not going to like being transplanted. Save some of the seed and throw it out where you want the plants. Bet they do better than the inside ones. My cosmos and zinnias reseed every year. In fact I've had snapdragons do it too.

Might want to try both ways.
