chinese elm ant and insect problem HElp!!

I have a chinese elm I raised from seed it is probably 6 years old and I just discovered it has an ant problem, and it has these little bumpy looking things on the leafs and stems? Can anyone help!!!! I love my tree! the leaves also have a little brownish black looking rust underneeth the leaves?

On another note I have a Yucca tree that also has these little like seed spores all over it!!! Its just a baby i don't want it to die!!! Help!

Is it scale? (suction cup type insects that dont appear to be able to move, they are often brown, and if you scrape em off, you can see little white granules come out of em' sometimes? I had those attack my yucca last year. I take a q-tip or a washcloth and pour rubbing alcohol on it and scrub them off, it takes some time, but each time you do it, there are less and less. In fact, the only way I could have access to the scale in the leaf crotches of my yucca was to put the alcohol in a mister and spray the hole tree and even fill up the leaf crotches.

There are alot of insects that will prey on elms, but it sounds like it could be an aphid. These aphids often cause 'galls' on elms. When a plant detects unknown genetic material within it's tissues it will form a special material as an attempt to isolate the material. Often, however, insects will use this material in various ways, like laying eggs to overwinter in.

My tree has been inside the entire winter, although I keep it outside throughout the spring and summer. I was told that it is too cold in Wisconsin to let the tree stay outside during the winter - especially since I purchased the tree from a seller in California. I am quite certain it is dormant because it hasn't been putting out any new growth and it was shedding leaves like crazy earlier last month. I checked and the limbs must be still alive because there was green under the bark. Hope this information helps, Joe

Bonita: I see your question was from January but had a couple of thoughts even if they are a bit late. Or did you plant something already? First we have ordered TONS of plants and trees from Forest Farm (link below) and you just cannot go wrong. Everything always arrives in a very timely fashion and well packaged. I have ordered a couple of plants from Gurneys and it has always been a nightmare. I'll never do it again. If you want lush plants that are the size described order from Forest Farm. They also have an unbelievable selection. On that note, we ordered six Thuja Green Giant trees from Forest Farm this year for the purpose of creating a privacy screen in the back yard. Although I thought they perhaps could have been a bit lusher they were nice trees, about five feet tall and very healthy. I would recommend these trees for being reasonably fast growing. In my experience with the five I have from a few years ago they don't grow three feet in a year like the hype says but they are lovely, tough little trees that make a hedge. Excellent thanks. I just went out now 11:30 PM and they were all huddled under a single leaf perfectly in line along the leaf's edge for the night. A little creepy. About twenty of them. Not anymore hah. Gave the tree a real nice strong blast with the hose. Dunno where they are now but will have another look tomorrow. My single orange dog is still there. I leave one or two but remove any eggs I find. I'll host a couple of them for the swallowtails but no more than that. Thanks all!
