Is my cherry tree doomed?

I recently recieved a cherry tree as a gift. I am attempting to keep it inside since right now I am living in an apartment. The cherry tree is about four feet tall at the moment and I would like to keep it this size. I would also like to get the tree to fill out a bit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I do not know the exact species of the tree since it was a gift. All thet it said was that it was an ornamental flowering cherry. Shows how much I know I thought all cherry trees flowered. I was told that the tree could be trained to grow how I want it. I have also been told that I could go 2-3 years before repotting. Again I am new to this so any advice would be helpfull. thank you.

You really weren't told the most important thing of all, it's not a houseplant. They grow outdoors period. It needs to be outside if you hope to keep it alive.

Hi, I wonder if what you received wasn't a Eugenia, Australian brush cherry (not a real 'cherry' tree at all), which are commonly sold for bonsai growing (and real cherries are not except in certain circumstances). If you can post a pic on this forum's gallery (see prev. pg) with a note here to let us know, someone will tell you what you're really growing. A 'genie' needs a wide humidity tray of stones and water under the pot, but water should never touch the pot (or roots could rot). It needs lots of sun all day and being a tropical must stay indoors for winter. Water only when either at least 1/3 of the soil is dry, or when leaves look a bit droopy compared to the previous day's observations. Good luck.

I have read that in this instance that people can do two grafts. The native variety being the most hardy and strongest rooting, then a short intermediary piece which can bridge between the native and fruiting varieties. Can anyone assist? Or know someone who can? I have cut down a large native cherry and would like to graft lapins and stella to the sprouts which are sure to come up this spring. "example taken from plum/almond stone fruit grafting" - " Also (and this is where the fun starts) most fruit trees in the Prunus genus are sometimes compatible with each other: almonds, apricots, nectarines, peaches, and plums all are compatible for grafting, but occasionally it's complicated. For example, some plum rootstock is not compatible with peaches or nectarines; and some almonds require an intermediate step before grafting onto some plum rootstocks."

Caulk? Probably not a good idea. Best advice would be to contact an arborist in your area.

No, doesn't have to be organic, although I prefer that. I think I'll try soapy water spray, and A hose rinse afterwards. Only have a bilge pump in the ditch running off a car battery, so the hose pressure is very weak, this will be a PITA. It Might kill the ladybugs on there too.

I seriously doubt someone would buy and give a 4 foot tall tropical brush cherry in your neck of the woods. How many of those have you seen and how much do you think it would cost if it were one :-)?

I've seen them for sale, and not necessarily at an exhorbitant price - they weren't being sold as bonsai, but just trees, like ficus. And how do you know where I live?

You are telling me they sell 4 foot tall brush cherries in zone 5? I rarely see plants that size for sale in zone 10.

I'm not sure if this is good news folks ,but I found out that it is a "Kwanzan Flowering Cherry." What do you think can this tree survive inside? Any chance? Again any advice on pruning, watering, or anything you think I need to know would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

I believe that's the cherry tree grown around the U.S. Capitol that looks so beautiful every spring. Doesn't sound like real good potential as an indoor tree. Good luck with it.

Won't grow indoors - it is a 'real' cherry tree, sorry.
