Oh, Sandy, the heat is awful! I just came in after watering a few things. Just planted out my A. purpurescens, so keeping a close eye on them. The others haven't done too well, to be honest. I think the early heat wave that began in May has taken its toll on a lot of plants and people. I still have to plant a few but I am trying to wait until fall to do a lot of them. The A. variegata is just "hanging in" there for now, but this heat has intercepted any significant growth on a lot of my plants, except for the tropicals I am raising. Finally getting my first blooms on Night Blooming Jessimine (Cestrum nocturnum), which is said to attract the sphinx moths in droves. We'll see. Eric, I am also growing the tropical A. physocarpa, aka Oscar, aka Family Jewels, etc., and usually it attracts as well if not better than the A. curassavica. So, I was kinda surprised they hit the Tropical first. Ya just never know. :) I don't know, Sandy, about the drove of Monarchs. I just haven't seen it yet. But perhaps. I saw the biggest Red Admiral this morning I've ever seen. She had to be almost equal in size to a large QM. She's probably gonna lay eggs on the Boehmeria cylindrica. The early heat in May and the rain we've had seems to have caused an explosion in the insect population, too. Lots of predators out there, and the wasps are numerous. To answer all of your questions and concerns would fill this web page to the brim. Nurseries in our area sell plants that are very suspect for the zone we live in yet they have plenty of plants available that are well suited for our zone. Plants in containers, in my experience, are better than sowing seeds. If you are concerned about invasiveness of ornamental grasses then read about the grasses that you wish to plant and then purchase those that are more contained and controllable. We have never cut the bottom off a container and planted the container. Knowing some growers that have done this their stories as told was the grasses eventually grow out the bottom and sprouted outside the pot. Yes the grasses were controlled for a period of time but ....! Ornamental grasses in general, not all grasses but most, like to be abused. This being less water than most other perennial plants. There are early or cool season grasses and warm season grasses. Cool meaning they start their growth in the early spring and bloom early summer. Some of these grasses will stay attractive throughout the season while others will look spent. Warm season grasses start their growth when the temperature gets warmer or more into late April early May. The warm season grasses will bloom late summer throughout the fall. Now addressing the "bright" colors your statement leaves me a little confused as there are no real yellows, blues, purples, reds or oranges that can be associated with grasses as these colors are associated with perennials and annuals. Grasses do have green to green-blue to blue-green, dull green to pale green to bright green and green-white vertical stripes to white-green stripes and green with yellow and or white horizontal stripes. In stature grasses are known as - clump or tufted very short 6-12" (something like a Hostess snowball is shaped such as Festuca glauca "Elijah Blue"), - mounding 15" or larger (similar to clump but larger in size (such as Pennisetum "Hameln"), - upright (very vertical like Calamagrostis "Karl Foerster"), - upright divergent (vertical w/ some spreading at the top or vase shaped such as Panicum "Cloud Nine"), - upright arching (top portion arches outward such as Panicum "Cloud Nine"), - arching taller than mound with very little upright base and arching over (such as Miscanthus "Morning Light" a very large portion of Miscanthus grasses are arching or upright arching). In closing I would highly recommend that you get a hold of a book called Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses by Rick Darke. Money well spent. Jake

A timely topic! My first reaction to the recalled Scotchguard was "huh?" because I've bought it in recent years. Evidently it's still sold but has been reformulated. The manufacturer has info. about the chemical change on its website, at http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Scotchgard/Home/Resources/Environmental/ Teak furniture: that's a tough decision on whether to try to keep it the original gorgeous color, or let it go gray. We bought a teak bench several years ago for our semi-sheltered front porch and I've been cleaning and applying new teak oil about twice a year in the likely losing battle to keep it pristine. For cleaning, I've used an inexpensive teak cleaner I bought at Christmas Tree shop. I'm out of the original teak oil and need to decide whether to buy a new can, or use the Penofin Hardwood Formula I just bought to treat an old cedar glider. I'm tempted to go with the Penofin since I think it has more UV screening than teak oil, but it does seem to leave a pretty dark finish. I used it last night on the cedar glider, after sanding off as much of the failed spar varnish as I could, but it's never going to look new. We bought a very inexpensive teak bench for our shady backyard, and I'm not even going to try to keep it looking new. It's already grayed and splotchy, but that's OK--it looks right for its setting and is sure a lot less work. Other furniture: I've sworn off anything steel. If it isn't wood or aluminum I'm not buying it, no matter how attractive or a good buy it is, because eventually it will rust. I also try to resist buying anything with cushions since they're so much aggravation. I don't have the space to store furniture; the glass and aluminum table stays on the deck all winter and the chairs fold up and get tucked in a not terribly sheltered corner. The gas grill has a good cover on it. Our deck is made out of a PVC material that never needs refinishing and the railing is oiled wood rails and aluminum balusters. It's tough: we have a short season, there's ALWAYS something coming down (oak flowers, winter moth droppings, green pollen), there's always mildew ready to attack, even on the south side of the house. We have other warm weather hobbies that compete for our time. I think lowered expectations may be the best approach!

I've read it is not good for cheesecake but I don't make cheesecake anyway. I have seen recipes for cheesecake using it in Cooking Light magazine, but I dunno if the recipes are any good. Probably not good in danish and the like either. I use it mostly to spread on bagels and toast and english muffins, in which case it tastes just fine. I top it with a dab of homeade jam, yum. Great with lox, since that has a strong taste so I don't miss the extra taste for that application. Fine with those dream eggs, because they were flavored with the herbs anyway, and the neufatchel just added a wonderful creamy texture, even with 1/3 less fat. Since cream cheese is almost pure fat, 1/3 less doesn't make it a diet food by any means, but I like it just as well if not better than cream cheese for what I use it for, so that's what I buy for the calorie savings. I don't mind it in party spreads either. NO FAT cream cheese, on the other hand, tastes "gummy" to me and with almost no taste, it's all gummy texture. Lpink, that kugel recipe looks interesting, too. I've never had anything like it. I'm wondering if I could do something along those lines, varying some of the ingredients, and using that chocolate pasta I haven't gotten around to using yet. I'll think about it and come up with something I hope works. Ann, your recipes and photos are always so tempting and beautiful! David, I want to save that onion dip recipe, too. But since it was part of the original recipe in the newsletter, I figured I should include it. :) Nate's killing me with those cookies. DH and I went out today on a chicken coop tour of East Dallas. (which was lots of fun, but a whole nother topic) Then I had to clean the kitchen in order to cook in it. But, my little grandson (a month away from 3 yrs. old) and I did get started on Nate's carrot cake cookies, but since we didn't finish making the dough until an hour before his bed time, and the dough has to chill at least an hour, it'll be tomorrow before we bake them and do the cream cheese part. It doesn't matter. Both DGS and I had a great time mixing up the batter. He got to taste the flour, the sugar, the butter, and all the other ingredients as they went into the mix. No germaphobes need taste these cookies when they're done! Thanks Nate for the recipe, and the fun time with my grandson!
