Planting Daffodil bulbs now?

My neighbor gave me a bag of 100 Daffodil bulbs she forgot to plant in the fall. The bulbs have been stored in a cool/cold, dry, dark garage. They are starting to sprout with about 1/4 to 1/2 inch growth on some bulbs. I dug a bed and planted them. What can I expect? I just figured planting them was better than tossing them in the compost bin!!!!

What I have found here in my zone, is when I plant fall bulbs in the late winter (like now) is that only part of them bloom the first season, but that they then are all right the next season.

I just figured planting them was better than tossing them in the compost bin!!!!
I think you are right...and did the right thing. I hope you enjoy many blooms from this season, though they will be much later than usual.

King Alfred Daffodils would take over my whole garden if not regularly removed. I am the volunteer gardener for a local museum and I can dig out my extra Daffodils anytime before the blooms open and plant them in the museum garden and they bloom right on schedule. Last fall I dug out a wild rose bush that comes back regularly. Under the rose were about a dozen Daffodil bulbs which I threw into an empty pot and set aside. About 3 weeks ago I noticed the pot with most bulbs sprouted and some stems about 4 inches long. I planted them at the museum and they are now in full bloom. WOW! I am so glad that I am not the only one! LOL! I bought some tulip bulbs last fall, and I was going to plant them in containers. However, I never got round to doing that. I left the bulbs in the unheated (but insulated) garage, which was in the mid 30's to low 40's during winter. About a month ago, I planted the bulbs in some containers, and now they are sprouting very well in the garage! My questions are: 1. When will it be safe to take the containers outside? It can still go to low 30's here at night. 2. How likely are they going to bloom this year, given that the bulbs were chilled in the garage? I am quite surprised by how well they are sprouting! You shouldn't have moved them when you did...they're out of the ground now and chances are the foliage has wilted...and will not send its sugars back down into the bulb. Put them back ...somewhere...and hope the foliage will die back and do send energy back down into the bulb. If you cant plant them in their permanent place, then put them into a container and let them finish what they should have been allowed to do. Then, put them back when you can. Daffodil bulbs do not need to be lifted--they stay in the ground year round and and need no protection whatsoever. You will get your verdict on them next season whether what you did did them harm.

Heck if I know! I have white Zephyranthes Atamasco bulbs blooming now! Normal bloom time is Easter. I wouldn't worry about the daffodils. I have had them come up this early and still bloom on time in the spring.

I always plant my left over and misplaced bulbs this time of the year. Just planted 200 Crocus amd some Iris retics this AM. Most will produce foliage this year, but few blooms. I usually top dress them with a small amount of balanced slow release(4 months) fertilizer, such as 15-15-15 and then an application of 6-12-12 in the Fall. They should bloom normally next Spring. My Spring(2005) planted bulbs are blooming now, along with their long established counterparts. I still have a lot more to to plant, but have to wait on the batteries for my drill to recharge(that's my excuse for taking a break!). Good luck! Rb
