King Alfred Daffodils would take over my whole garden if not regularly removed. I am the volunteer gardener for a local museum and I can dig out my extra Daffodils anytime before the blooms open and plant them in the museum garden and they bloom right on schedule. Last fall I dug out a wild rose bush that comes back regularly. Under the rose were about a dozen Daffodil bulbs which I threw into an empty pot and set aside. About 3 weeks ago I noticed the pot with most bulbs sprouted and some stems about 4 inches long. I planted them at the museum and they are now in full bloom. I am having the same problem with crocuses. I planted them three weeks ago, and we have such zig zag weather here in the winter. Last week we had 30's at night, this week, we're in the 60's. I'm thinking that I might just get to enjoy them over the winter since our winter temps will be similar to early spring in colder climates. The crocuses haven't broken through the top yet, I only know that they're trying because I found one that a critter had dug up. It had sprouts and roots, so I replanted it. Dang Armadillos!!!

Hello; I have overwintered cannas. I divided them into 5 tubers & have put them into two 8" pots, half burying them. They are in a room with 20C temperature but not in the light. Some of them have sprouted green leaves. my question is ,I did not fully bury them. is that a problem? Also they aren't getting a lot of light.I plan to move them out in May. Will they survive inside till then.

It's normal for bulbs to push up a bit of foliage in warm weather spells, but not a problem. I would think the echinacea will be OK as well as long as it hasn't really started growing. Yes you can whack back things now, though watch where you step so you aren't squashing plants or compacting wet soil. I prefer to use old fashioned hedge shears since it's quieter, makes clean cuts, and it's easy to clean up so I don't leave behind plant matter that might harbor disease. I think the bee balm is more of a disease risk than the echinacea, so I would definitely cut that back. I try to be conscientious about cutting back disease prone plants and often wait until early spring for plants that have seed the birds might like or ones that are ornamental in winter.
