Hardy Container Plants for Shade Zone Five? Anything Edible?

I have moved and am now looking for hardy container plants for a shaded patio area. I have half-whiskey barrels and some other wooden containers of that size. I am looking for ideas for any shrubs, perennial ground covers, or any edibles in any combination. I have thought about some shrubs like clethra(possibly)? that are hardy and can take shade, but the only perennial edibles I could come up with are possibly mints and maybe Jostaberry, or alpine strawberries. Anyone have any ideas for either edible or regular shrubs or groundcovers? Shade + container + perennial + zone 5/6 does not seem to be a good conbination. *sigh*

I had many things in like-sized containers at my other place and they all did well-but that place was mostly full sun, and this place is mostly shade.

Thanks.
