Chopping the Cherry Tree

weissenheimer

Late, last summer I found a few cherry tree saplings growing in the wild and I decided to "rescue" one for myself. So I cut one down to just above the lowest branch and earmarked it for digging up this year. Yesterday I noticed that it is growing new foliage at the end of the remaining branch and IÂm guessing that it must soon be time to dig it up.

As the trunk is much too long for bonsai application IÂll have to chop it WAY down and sacrifice the only remaining branch and foliage. The question is, should I chop it at the time of digging it up or should I plant it in a large container "as is" and wait until I have the roots as I want them before hacking at the trunk? I doubt very much that IÂll be putting it straight into a bonsai container this year any way, but what to do about the trunk? Straight in with the saw - or wait?
