Need vine/trailers for zone 10 South East Balcony

Hi!

I just moved into a new apartment that has a weird mini balcony.

It isn't really a balcony so much as a 10 inch ledge with a regular waist high metal railing just outside french doors.

I'd like to see something nice when I have the doors open.

Something with A LOT of flowers!

I am intrigued by the usual suspects, the morning glories, black eyed susans and sweet peas.

Any others suggestions?

Since I'm in zone 10 do you think I would be able to successfuly start these from seeds? or would i be better off with established plants?

OR - should i just get something that trails like geraniums or something.

Nancey - you could try those from seed. How the peas do might depend on whether you are coastal or inland as at least the annual ones do better when it's cooler (so might be one to try in winter for you).

Some other things you could try are bougainvillea, mandevilla, allamanda, various jasmines, and bower vine (there's a variegated one that is pretty).

Do some passionflowers! They're spectacular. I'm a balcony gardener also, and have at least a dozen passionflowers. (Okay, my balcony is bigger than yours... LOL) They'll climb onto whatever they can. The flowers are amazing. Some are fragrant, some will produce fruit. Some are butterfly host plants!

Hi KraZbuderfly, I have a balcony something like yours, cocked to slightly face northeast, slatted, but on the end. The end faces west and the other end is blocked. I have an overhead balcony too, limiting the light somewhat. I've lived here for 5 years (6th spring), so have had lots of time to experiment. Still experimenting! LOL Currently I have: Perennials Climbing rose (on west end) Peony (just planted last year, but it's coming up now) Pink carpet hanging rose (both roses were planted last year) Columbine Hosta Astilbe Pansies Ornamental grass Fern (no sign yet this year) Great Blue Lobelia (no sign this year) Vines 3 clematises Morning glories - planted indoors, ready to go out if they don't die first from planting too soon, last year they did fine I grew a Sweet Autumn clematis for three years but got tired of it and wanted something else. Shasta Daisies (treated as an annual so I could plant the peony) Water Garden This did well the first year because I had the right plants in it. It's declined every year since. This year we're going to clean it out and only put things in that will grow in the shade, like water lettuce, water hyacinth, a tiny bit of duckweed or Spanish Lace. We haven't decided what else. Herbs I'm not much for veggies, but do grow a little parsley, chives and some feverfew in a self-watering pot. I've grown a lot of other herbs that have done well. Here's this year's pot: The feverfew came back from last year. The parsley is a little small, so will replace it. Chives are doing fine. Bulbs Snowdrops Puschkinia Tulips Daffodils Lilies (Asiatic and Orientals) Annuals Last Year Torenia Sweet alyssum Coleus (I have Glennis coming) Plectranthus Mimulus Verbena Blue Moon lobelia (does great every year) Here's what it looks like so far this year: We look west to the mountains with Denver in the foreground. I know what you mean about some things not succeeding because of something you did. I let my mimulus dry out last year, same with astilbe. But I'm DETERMINED this year not to let anything dry out!! I have a few self-watering pots, and they're the greatest, but then I don't think they need as much watering and I forget to fill the reservoirs. It's a lot harder in August than it is in June! Well, I read your post and then got engrossed in the subject of living walls. I think you might find it helpful to look at your library for books about this subject, plus green roofs. It isn't a new concept, since traditional Scandinavian structures had living roofs etc. And today, Germany is one of the leaders in mitigating the environment by planting living walls and green roofs. They can do it because their building codes allow it. One book that I have is titled LIVING SYSTEMS: INNOVATIVE MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE. It lists a lot of plants they've used in climates I'd consider as cold as NYC. They use a lot of cable, and turnbuckles to keep the cables taut, and then they have a lot of vines which can be planted either in the ground surrounding buildings, or in planting containers. They particularly use a lot of vines. I'd even hazard to say that your balcony would be one place that KUDZU would work nicely, since it can grow a foot a day. I've noticed that Plant Delights Nursery in N.C. sells some variegated kudzu, but it is against the law to plant it in places like Atlanta. If you are looking for a shade maker, then kudzu is for you. When I was driving through Palacios Texas several years back, hotter than blazes and no shade anywhere, I saw this little trailer nestled beneath a pergola that was covered entirely with kudzu. And that was the best use of the plant I ever saw. There was enough room for a small patio and a hammock beneath that dense shade. Of course, in NYC it would succumb to the really frigid temps, which might be a good thing. But it would also give you some time and protection to get other vines growing up cables on your fire escape. One thing which comes to mind is the climbing hydrangea which is cold hardy and can (in the ground anyway) reach tremendous heights. Less ambitious but probably hardy would be some clematis. I'd also get some annual vines like morning glory or hyacinth bean (edible too), and the wisteria may survive the climate as well. Heaven knows it is an aggressive plant which gets so massive a trunk that I've seen it squeeze the life out of trees. A native of China and Japan, where I think the winter could be as cold as NYC. It would be doable in big containers with protection. Look for this book: PLANTING GREEN ROOFS AND LIVING WALLS by Nigel Dunnett and Noel Kingsbury. I was intending to put a living roof on my old derelict garage but was persuaded otherwise. Fascinating topic though. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Vine covered trellis and pergola Zone 6

Thanks everyone. My gardener and his crew are great, and don't worry - they are appreciated. It's just that I have no gardening expertise and when I came home and saw my pergola and trellis denuded I was literally in tears. I have enjoyed looking at them all through the winter, dead as they were. I will now take a deep breath and accept that there will be a time of year where my pergola and trellis will be somewhat denuded, in the interest of maintaining the pretty white wooden backdrop. Although I respect my gardener, he is self-taught and so I thought it was entirely possible that there were options out there of which he was not aware (or which the PO rejected for some reason). Having explored and googled a bit and read your comments, we will sit tight with what we have. Hose - LOL, thank you. We deserve no credit for the scences you see; and they are a key part of the entire magical look of this property which compelled us to but the house and move our family here totally on a lark! The contractor did replace the vines, btw. I will post a link with more photos for you. Natal - not too humid here in CT. I like the green moss myself, but I guess the clematis against true white is even niceer. Woody - yes, its scented. It was cut back pretty much to the top of the columns. Duly noted on the roses. I think i might have New Dawn elsewhere already. It is very pale pink and smells wonderful! I am just finding my way with our property, which is extensively landscaped. I hired a landscape architect who had done our old home, and his ideas were way too formal and structured. So I've not implemented them. Then I got someone at my local nursey to draw plans for some beds on the far side of the pond. They were not woodland at all, and they had way too much variety of plant material for an area I want to be pretty but natural. I can tell this is going to be a long process getting everything the way I want it and, as always, there is no substitute for the unbiased expertise of GW. Thanks!

Yes, in the USA, where people are accustomed to brightly colored peels on their citrus , they would automatically just assume the orange is unripe if the peel is green so I doubt many people would buy them as is. That's exactly why some commercial distributors in this country artificially dye their peels. I've seen oranges, limes and lemons that have clearly had their peels dyed. I used to pick all citrus at market by the color of their peels but after picking many citrus fruit at market with beautifully deeply colored peels in the past only to find them hard, dry and pithy inside, I now know better. Juicy ripe citrus will give a bit to pressure when filled with juice and fully ripe

Thanks for the suggestions - i am somewhat coastal (about a mile from the shore) so i do get the breezes and the cooler nights.
I am thinking of going with the sweet peas...until i saw pictures of the passion flowers!

Now i have to decide.
Can passion flowers be started with seeds? or is it better to go with an established plant this time of year.

Also - how big of a container should i have for either of these?

Passionflowers can be grown from seed, or cuttings. I personally haven't ever tried from seed, though I have a stash of a few different sorts of passiflora in case I get brave. I've grown several from cuttings, with which I have mixed success-- they either take off or they kick the bucket pretty quickly. But many people grow them from seed effortlessly (I'm just impatient, I guess!) But in our zone, passionflowers are pretty easy to find at reasonable prices. Even Home Depot carries them sometimes. My smaller ones are in one gallon nursery sleeves, and my largest ones are in 5 gallon containers. They're usually pretty heavy feeders, though I don't often fertilize at all. Regular watering, most like full sun, though some are a little less tolerant of sun. Part sun would work for any of them, really. Go for it!

Until this past winter when I had an awful mealy bug infestation which took out my passies, I had 3 - 2 P. edulis and a P. belotti. I had them in 14" containers and trained them up a 5ft tee pee per plant. You really might consider edulis to get the fruit if anything. They do grow fast!

hi, i used to live in zone 10. go to BUTTERFLY WORLD, not only is it worth the trip to see all the butterflies, but also the plants there. also they have a excellent nursery that sells many passionvines. have fun

If you're not big about watering a lot, consider rose moss (portulaca), purselaine or ice plant (delosperma or mesembrianthemum). All are succulent trailers that flower nicely even when it's quite dry.

This is an old thread but I'm bringing it up again, as I've just acquired a balcony with sorta similar conditions (It's a zone 9 west.)

Nanzey, did you plant anything? How did it turn out?
