Recommend a window box plant

I have window boxes that are not very deep, maybe 6" deep and 6" wide.

A location that gets pretty much full sun in front of my window

I tried to grow gerbera daisies, it was great but now it is too hot the flower and leaves wilt unless I water about 3 times a day.

Can you recommend a plant that can be in FULL SUN, does not need watering as frequently and provide beautiful flowers through out this summer, not too tall, can live on short depth window boxes without drying up?

Of course, a cactus is not what I'm looking for :)

You know what I ALWAYS hear that Californians grow in some windowbox or pot in those conditions? Nasturtiums! There are some that are gorgeous, and they will fill up the container like a little bush and trail down the sides. And they bloom all summer. You could also try some of the low-growing lantana or even some million bells or mini-petunias (which I noticed alot of places around here are selling instead of the million bells). You might even try a mini bougainvillea since they seem to mainly bloom when stressed - ie., when they are hot, dry, and potbound. lol

To try to reduce the watering, consider gettng some moisture-retaining crystals like SoilMoist into your soil mix and that will help.

What part of Northern CA are you in?
That would be the most important thing to know.
What people are growing in full sun in SF wouldn't last out in Walnut Creek's 100 degree days.
Some plants for very hot sun are:
Vinca (I have them planted in very shallow box).
They are both on the short side.
Marigolds (an old standby, but they do take the heat).
Million bells (Calabracha) These will cascade.
Lantana is good, however I've only seen it sold in gallon containers.
I always take a look around and see what the City is planting in full sun on the streets and in the shopping centers.
I would also consider mulching to keep the tops moist.

It looks like you are arranging tallest in back. How much sun will the plants get? 4-5 hours in the AM? Do you want the dusty miller for the color contrast? Have you thought about including some trailing Coleus or sweet potato vine? How about Persian shield or Perilla. Something to add color in part shade? I just bought 2 containers of Dracaena marginata ÂTricolorÂ (three plants about 24" tall in each container for $8 per container) I'll separate them and use them fr a ht accent in containers. I also overwintered some Cordyline 'Red Stars' that I'll use for ht. Diascia will do well on an east exposure. Carpet petunias will also bloom in a steady stream of blossoms & won't fizzle out like the super-t's do for some people. I was well pleased with cabana (Sutera cordata) in semi shade containers last year. There is just soo much good material out there to work with. I know you'll do very well in selecting your plants. There are probably a lot of others with better "eyes" than I, for what looks good in containers. Everything you mentioned will work together. I always keep an eye out for different stuff to fill containers. You can see that I use perennials that aren't hardy here. Some things are considered houseplants, but they work in containers. I need your help with how to plant bulbs in window boxes

Well, I know they got well chilled in that cool dark room over the course of winter. About mid-March I potted them all up using 8 and 10 inch pots. Packed in the tulips well, I think 6-8 per 8 inch pot, 10-12 per 10 inch pot. Only filled the pots halfway with potting soil, then set in the bulbs and barely covered them with soil. My solarium in general is warmer than the outdoors- it's pretty much a large three seasons porch. I put the pots onto the potting bench I have stretching across the south face of the room, and when they started showing serious leaning, I moved the pots under the skylight. By the time the first weekend in May hit, the earliest of the tulips was just getting past peak, and the latest of them was just starting to come into bloom. You can dry out your bulbs in a single layer- like spread out on the kitchen table or something like that. After they are dry, you can store them in a mesh bag in a cool dark place.

soxxxx - you have a good idea. And after looking at the photos, I've grown so used to the odd window placement that I really see how it could be made to look much better. My brain is clicking again. Uh-oh. My uncle was a carpenter but did some strange things. On the back of the house (school),he merely dropped the ceilings down over the two tall windows of the half of the building he made livable. In other words he didn't cut them down or out, so the original windows are there but only the bottoms show inside. The tops are visible from the outside but are camouflaged. Hard to explain, so here is a pic, taken last Fall showing the two windows, the center one and the one on the far right. I'm actually very happy he didn't destroy them because I love the illusion plus who knows a future owner may decide to completely gut the house and restore it. You never know.

Sorry to be boring..but I find that geraniums flower all of the year except for two months. Nice to be guaranteed some flowers.

I think lavender looks really smart in window boxes but I don't know which type to get to be compact enough :-( My lavender in a pot goes all over the place.
