I need your help with how to plant bulbs in window boxes

You guys are so knowledgeable about this stuff, this was the first place I thought to ask how to do this.

I went crazy at the bulb sales and bought a gazillion Narcissus, Tulip, and Crocus bulbs.

I have tried planting bulbs in my window boxes in October, and they don't ever come up in the spring. It's too cold here.

I was so excited that my geraniums overwintered beautifully in my garage last year! So this year I will be brave enough to try planting my bulbs in window boxes and pots and keeping them in the garage until spring.

Can you help me figure out how to do this please? How deep in the containers should I plant? I was thinking to put an inch of soil in, then the big bulbs, then fill with soil to within two inches of the top and press the little bulbs in?

Should I use that potting soil stuff that is basically peat moss and perlite? Or should I use what I call "the good stuff"? It's topsoil, manure and leaf compost all bagged up together.

I live in Chicago.
The window boxes are plastic, 8 inches deep, 30 and 36 inches long.
I also have some 16 inch pots and some bulb pans I would like to pot up.
The garage is attached to the building.
The window boxes get hung on my balcony railings.
The balcony faces south.
I re-plant my window boxes three times a year so I don't need to save the bulbs

I had some luck this spring past with potting up tulips. I got married the first weekend in May, and since the theme was spring flowers, I wanted a bunch of flowers blooming. I went a little nutty with tulips and grape hyacinths with the fall bulb clearance last year.
I just left the bulbs in their packages in an attached room to the house that is usually cool and dark till a couple months before I wanted the blooms, then potted them all up in my solarium and forced them- and they all were blooming on the day.
Afterwards, I planted them in the yard. This fall I'm doing the same thing, getting the bulbs now and then I'll pot and force them before planting them into the yard. Sure made knowing where to plant a lot easier.

That's fabulous! I love it. So how did you force them for the wedding? Did you just pot them up and bring them in after six weeks or so?

I have a problem now!!!

I left a lot of bulbs out on the balcony and it rained last night, they all got wet.

I have already potted up a lot of my bulbs, but what should I do with the wet ones? Hang them in the garage to dry???

It may seem tedious, hard, and unnecessary to move these plants, although most gardeners enjoy re-arranging to improve their garden's function and appearance. Most hate trying to move or rip out the mistake of previous owners, mistakes which sometimes then reveal damage. Because these plants are still manageable, this situation can be set right. Once done, you will be again at the point of considering next steps toward the goal of eventually having very little upkeep to handle. You will have lost nothing and gained several benefits: Protection of your home. Healthier plants. Better looking in terms of appropriate rather than crowded spacing. You will still have: Same plants. Screening of windows. And there are psychological and physical benefits: Lowered anxiety about whether the paint job and wood will deteriorate due to those pieris. Spring exercise planting your beautiful shrubs. Self-esteem up because you've gained knowledge and improved something wisely. Yes, you calculated the spacing, but forgot to calculate appropriate distance from building. Also, a shrub doesn't reach a certain number and then say to itself, "I'm 5 feet tall and wide now. I better stop or the shrub police will come and get me." Shrubs are living and, unlike humans, continue to gain height and width throughout their lives. I think the size ranges are estimated for 5 to 10 years?, but the shrubs don't know that and they will keep growing. What's to lose here? Re-planting 3 shrubs? Ah, c'mon! There are a lot of helichrysums, and they can be very different from one another. I have several as they do well for me. Note that when they are happy, they can be aggressive towards their neighbors. 'Limelight' is a pale chartreuse trailer, with soft succulent fuzzy leaves. Beautiful against something with big dark leaves. There is a helichrysum which has smaller, rounder leaves of fuzzy gray-green. Tends to spread sideways and get a bit bare in the center stem area. Very much a groundcover plant, it doesn't droop gracefully, the stems are long and forked, branching upwards. Can't recall its Latin name right now although it was listed as a Licorice plant, so probably a variety of H. petiolare. Helichrysum petiolare 'Variegata' is white and gray-green, fuzzy, and very vigorous. Goes upwards, downwards and sideways -- in fact, any direction it can find. Leaves are round, but a bit larger than its cousin the Licorice helichrysum listed above. The color and shape of the shrub mixes well with other plants. H. petiolare 'White Licorice' has round, clustered leaves similar to 'Limelight', but in a pale grayish-white, no variegation. It almost looks like a Plectranthus argentatus but the leaves are not toothed. There is a helichrysum known as the Curry Plant, Helichrysum angustifolium, with very fine spikey leaves and a distinct smell of curry powder (it fades when dried, but you can use it in cooking with fresh leaves). It is more of a dusty miller-type plant in shape and bloom. Helichrysum bracteatum is the strawflower plant, which of course doesn't look like any of its cousins!

Hi Deanna, Bulbs store energy for the plant that can tide it over during rough times. So, rotted stems are like busted stems, as long as the bulb is large enough to support itself through next year (its not a tiny bulblet) it will come back, just a little smaller. This may result in a smaller plant with fewer blooms the first season but it will otherwise be fine. The thing to check is whether or not the bulbs have healthy looking roots. In the Fall if you find that the bulb and roots are rotten I wouldn't bother to plant it. Stressed bulbs often will decide to take a season off and not send up foliage (or abort growth already started). Instead it will spend its time growing new roots. So that doesn't mean they are dead. It sounds like your stems got the fungal disease botrytis possibly from overwatering. With your curled up new sprouts (possibly lieing along the soil) this would be an easy thing to have happen. Putting late planted bulbs in pots is usually a good idea since you can use sterile well draining soil and, depending on where you put the pot, control watering and sun. So don't hesitate to do that in the future. Botrytis strikes plenty of lilies in the garden as well. I'd cut away any diseased foliage (and throw it out securely) and spray the remaining foliage and the pots soil surface with a rose fungal spray. Bob, figuring out the best lighting for our kitchen was one of the harder decisions I faced. In retrospect I wish I'd put in more cans, and spaced them more closely for more even light. The amount of light from each bulb is plenty (75 watts) but there isn't enough overlap. Our ceiling is 8' 7" high, and the room is 13.5' x 19'. We put in nine 6" recessed fixtures, one small, lower wattage recessed accent light, and two pendants over the island (I haven't yet figured out the best bulbs for these yet.) Eight of the recessed lights have 75 watt halogen bulbs, and one has a rather dim CF in it. The accent bulb doesn't add that much general light. I don't have any of them on a dimmer because there's barely enough light as it is. Above the sink area (a 12' long run of cabinets) there are 4 in a row, about 2.5' to 3' apart. This is the only part of the kitchen that is very well lit. In the rest of the room I only put one above each cabinet. This gives enough light to see into the cabinets and work at the counters. But even when all the lights are on, the general room lighting is a little annoying to me. This is because it's so directional (focused down) and there isn't enough ambient light. It's a little hard on my eyes. It would be better if there were more fixtures, closer together. That way the cones of light overlap and you don't get the dark patches between them. An ambient fixture that lit up the whole room might also work. I'd say follow the guidelines to make sure the cones of light overlap. Someone told me not to listen to lighting store people or electricians b/c they'd over-recommend the number of fixtures needed. That was a mistake, I should have gone with more lights, and not try to save money by installing a minimal number. Good luck!

Well, I know they got well chilled in that cool dark room over the course of winter.
About mid-March I potted them all up using 8 and 10 inch pots. Packed in the tulips well, I think 6-8 per 8 inch pot, 10-12 per 10 inch pot. Only filled the pots halfway with potting soil, then set in the bulbs and barely covered them with soil.
My solarium in general is warmer than the outdoors- it's pretty much a large three seasons porch. I put the pots onto the potting bench I have stretching across the south face of the room, and when they started showing serious leaning, I moved the pots under the skylight.
By the time the first weekend in May hit, the earliest of the tulips was just getting past peak, and the latest of them was just starting to come into bloom.

You can dry out your bulbs in a single layer- like spread out on the kitchen table or something like that. After they are dry, you can store them in a mesh bag in a cool dark place.

JUST follow the instruction on the package. Each bulb can be different.

Bees, thanks for the specific instructions. It sounds like you actually delayed the blooms on yours if you are in Zone 5/6!

I may try pulling a couple of pots in from the garage in February to get some blooms inside.

What a great idea.
